Oh, Chess! A timeless classic that needs no introduction, right? This two-player abstract strategy game simulates medieval warfare on an 8x8 board with alternating light and dark squares. Each player starts with their pieces (traditionally white and black) lined up on opposite sides. The cool thing is that each piece type has a unique way of moving and capturing: when a piece occupies an opposing piece's square, it removes it from the game. Players take turns moving one of their pieces, always aiming to capture, attack, defend, or improve their position on the board. A game can end in several ways: the famous checkmate (when the king has no escape), resignation (when a player sees that defeat is inevitable and decides to stop), or one of several types of draws. Chess is one of the most popular games in the world, played by millions of people at home, in clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments. Watching two experienced players in action is a spectacle in itself, and the game can entertain even beginners. The 2020 Netflix series, 'The Queen's Gambit,' was a huge hit, both with players and those who had never touched a board. There's a vast literature on Chess, full of game analyses and master commentaries. It's so well-known and respected that it has even become a metaphor in journalism, poetry, fiction, and film. Chess has its roots in the ancient Indian game Chaturanga, which became Shatranj when it reached the Persians. The version we know today emerged in the second half of the 15th century when the Persians brought Shatranj to Southern Europe. Organized competitive Chess began in the 16th century, and the first official World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886. Fun fact: Chess is even recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee. A true heritage of humanity!
