About the game
If you think you've mastered chess, get ready to have your brain fried in a much more exciting way with Shogi! This Japanese classic introduces a dynamic that Western chess can only dream of: the 'drop' rule. Instead of simply removing a captured piece from the board, it becomes yours! During your turn, you can choose to either move one of your existing pieces or 'drop' a captured piece back onto the board in a strategic position. This changes everything, because the game doesn't simplify as pieces are removed; on the contrary, the board tends to stay crowded and tense until the very last second.

The game is played on a 9x9 grid where the ultimate goal is to capture the opponent's King. Pieces are identified by the direction they face, avoiding color confusion. There's also the promotion factor: when a piece reaches the opponent's last three rows, you can choose to promote it, granting it more powerful movement patterns, like Dragon Kings or Dragon Horses. It's a game of pure strategy, where long-term planning meets immediate aggression. Because of this piece reintroduction mechanic, draws are extremely rare, making every match a frantic and decisive duel. If you're looking for a mental challenge that rewards pattern recognition and adaptability, Shogi is your new obsession.
