About the game

What you do in a play session

Cthulhu Gloom: Unpleasant Dreams is the expansion that drags the chaos of the Dreamlands right onto your tabletop. It adds 55 transparent cards to the base deck, introducing new morbid Modifiers, disturbing Events, dark Stories, bizarre Transformations, and Untimely Deaths that spice up the game even further. An entirely new family inhabits these dream realms, and you’ll have to face the creeping chaos of Nyarlathotep, manage a shantak that can be a loyal mount or a trap, and even confront Azathoth if you dare get too close. The biggest novelty are the two "Unwelcome Guests" character cards. At the start of the game, place one or both face‑up in the center. These guests follow the card types shown on them: whenever a "trigger" card is played, the living Guest jumps to the family of that character, taking all its Modifiers along. This can delay the game’s end, as a final move might pull a Guest into the near‑winner’s family, extending the showdown. The expansion supports 2‑6 players, preserving the swift flow of Cthulhu Gloom, where each round blends hand management, role‑playing, and cooperative storytelling, with generous doses of "take‑that" to mess with opponents. If you love cosmic horror, black humor, and narratives that unfold card by card, Unpleasant Dreams adds extra layers of unpredictability and fun. Get ready to dive into your own unpleasant dreams and see if your investigators can survive the inevitable doom awaiting them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

5 questions
How many players can join?
The expansion supports 2 to 6 players, provided everyone has the base game.
How long does a game take?
A typical session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on player count and familiarity with the base game.
Do I need to know English to play?
No. All expansion cards are printed in Portuguese, though the original English text is available for reference.
Do I need any extra components?
Only the Cthulhu Gloom base deck; the expansion adds no boards or tokens.
Are the transparent cards hard to read?
Some players find the transparency makes reading trickier under bright light, so good lighting or a tabletop protector helps.
