About the game
What you do in a play session
Dire Azathoth is the latest expansion that brings a new Great Old One into the Cthulhu Wars universe, adding a darker, more strategic layer to the game. To awaken the monster, you simply need to seize a gate in the starting area of an enemy faction – just pay 10 Altered Power and place Dire Azathoth in that area. When combat begins, the monster rolls a die and its Combat rating equals the number that appears, meaning it can be as strong as luck allows. What really makes this expansion shine is the “Mindless Destruction” mechanic: after each battle, any faction that fought in Dire Azathoth’s area receives a choice of 1 Doom or 1 Power for every unit it eliminated. Dire Azathoth doesn’t even have to be involved in the fight for this reward to be granted, creating unexpected tactical opportunities. If you want to finish the game in one go, there’s the Spellbook – just pay 20 Power as an action and summon the Blind Idiot God. This spell ends the game immediately, even if you haven’t collected all six faction spellbooks or the most Doom. The expansion requires translated cards or spreadsheets, as most components are still in English. But if you’re ready to dive into a cosmic horror setting with detailed miniatures, action point and area movement mechanics, Dire Azathoth turns every game into an epic clash where the outcome can swing on a single die roll.
