Cthulhu Wars: Masks of Nyarlathotep brings the first time you can put Nyarlathotep’s multiple forms into play. The expansion adds nine Dark Demon miniatures, nine loyalty cards, two spellbooks, and iconic figures: the Shadow Pharaoh, the Bloated Woman, and the Haunter of the Dark. Each form has its own twist: the Dark Demon turns the summoner into a grotesque monster, but recruiting it gives enemy factions a weakness; the Shadow Pharaoh, a mix of sphinx, scorpion, and mummy, forces cultists to flee gates, leaving them vulnerable; the Bloated Woman steals dead enemies and turns gates into Elder Sign generators; the Haunter of the Dark, an independent Great Old One, requires 6 Power to awaken, but can be obtained more easily in Crawling Chaos, and its “Fly the Light” weakness forces 1‑kill attacks to target it. The game keeps Action Points, letting players plan their moves, and Area Movement, dictating how units travel across terrain. Dice Rolling decides combat and events, while Variable Player Powers ensure each participant has unique abilities. With 2 to 8 players and 90 to 120 minutes of play, the expansion blends strategy, detailed miniatures, and cosmic horror into an experience that demands attention to translation time and complexity level.
