About the game

What you do in a play session

The Windwalker expansion adds a brand‑new, off‑beat faction to Cthulhu Wars: Ithaqua, the Outer Space deity. His army, powered by Arctic Winds, the Howl, and Ice Age spellbooks, truly shines in the late game, when opponents are already stretched thin. The centerpiece is the Gnoph‑Kehs, monsters that become cheaper the more of them you field, creating a feedback loop that forces rivals to stay alert. Ithaqua also brings Rhan‑Tegoth, an immortal Great Old One that is virtually impossible to kill, plus cultists that cannot be captured. Whenever a unit dies in battle, free Wendigos pop up anywhere, guaranteeing board presence. Ithaqua himself is usually the last Great One to awaken, but Rhan‑Tegoth serves as a durable ally in the meantime. The expansion keeps Cthulhu Wars’ core mechanics—Action Points, Area Movement, Dice Rolling, Variable Player Powers—while adding new cards, miniatures and abilities that shift the end‑game dynamics. If you love long‑term planning and waiting for the perfect moment to crush opponents, The Windwalker is tailor‑made for you. Conversely, players who like to dominate early may find the faction a bit too resilient, given its uncapturable cultists and free‑spawn units. Overall, the expansion deepens the base game, boosts replayability, and reinforces the Lovecraftian atmosphere with detailed miniatures and thematic effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

7 questions
How many players can use the expansion?
It works with 2 to 5 players, the same range as the base game.
What is the typical playtime?
Games still run about 90 minutes on average, depending on player experience.
Do I need to know the base game rules?
Yes, the expansion assumes familiarity with Cthulhu Wars and isn’t aimed at absolute beginners.
What new components does the expansion add?
New miniatures for Ithaqua, Gnoph‑Kehs, Wendigos and Rhan‑Tegoth, plus ability cards, markers and thematic tokens.
Does the expansion increase the game’s complexity?
Slightly. The added mechanics raise the weight to roughly 3.2/5, adding strategic depth.
Can I play the expansion without the base game?
No, The Windwalker is a supplement and requires the core Cthulhu Wars set.
Is it good for players who prefer fast strategies?
Not really; Ithaqua shines late, so fast‑play fans might not get the most out of it.
