About the game

What you do in a play session

Dao is an abstract strategy duel for two players, perfect for those who enjoy quick, tactical showdowns. Each side starts with four pieces arranged in an X shape at opposite corners of a 4 × 4 board. The sole rule is straightforward: slide a piece in a straight line—orthogonal or diagonal—as far as it can go without jumping over other pieces. From there, three victory routes emerge. First, line up all your pieces in a horizontal or vertical row (diagonals don’t count, as they form the initial setup). Second, occupy all four corners of the board simultaneously. Third, create a 2 × 2 square anywhere on the grid. Interestingly, there’s a fourth winning condition: if your opponent tries to “trap” one of your pieces in a corner, you automatically win, since that move is deemed anti‑play. The components are minimal—a board, two sets of four colored pieces, and a rule sheet. In about ten minutes the duel resolves, making it ideal for a coffee break or casual gaming session. While the mechanics are simple, depth arises from the myriad ways to block your rival while chasing one of the winning patterns. The game earned a Mensa Select award in 2001, confirming that even with few pieces it delivers a mental challenge worthy of forward‑thinking players.
