Step by step

Game Objective

In Dream On, you and your fellow dreamers are psychic forces helping a human have an intense dream and then remember it. The game is cooperative, meaning all players work together to create a strange, wacky, and detailed dream, and then try to remember everything, both the good and the bad. The goal is to accumulate as many points as possible, because the more points the team scores, the better you'll feel in the morning!

Setup

  1. Go to www.GalapagosJogos.com.br/app and download the Dream On timer app.
  2. Place the 3 Score cards (Individual, Cooperative, and Penalty) on one side of the table.
  3. Shuffle all 156 Dream cards and form a deck with them. Then, place it face down in the center of the table.
  4. Deal 3 Dream cards to each player, taking them from the top of the deck. Remember: even though it's a cooperative game, other players should not see your cards!
  5. One player must be chosen to start. The last player who had a lucid dream is the first to play!

Gameplay Flow

The game is divided into 2 main phases:

  • Phase 1: Dream – Players build the Dream.
  • Phase 2: Remember – Players try to remember the entire Dream, from beginning to end.

Phase 1: Dream

  1. The first player draws a Dream card from the top of the deck and places it face up next to the deck. This will be the first card of the Dream Pile.
  2. This face-up image should be used to start the Dream. The first player should use a few words to begin the story.
  3. As soon as the Dream begins, the first player must start the timer.
  4. Any player can play a Dream card from their hand at any time and place it face up on top of the Dream Pile.
  5. When playing a card, the player must use a few words to connect it in some way with the previous card in the Dream Pile, continuing the Dream's story.
  6. After placing a card on the pile, the player draws a new Dream card from the Dream deck. (You should always have 3 cards in your hand!)
  7. There is no specific order to play! Once the Dream begins, anyone can play a card and place it on the Dream Pile. A player can play multiple cards in sequence, always drawing a new one after each play.
  8. The Dream Phase ends the moment the timer runs out.

Phase 2: Remember

  1. All players discard any Dream cards they still have in hand.
  2. The 3 Score cards (Individual, Cooperative, and Penalty) should be placed in the center of the table.
  3. The last player to add a card to the Dream takes the Dream Pile and holds it with the cards face down (so the first card played will be on top). This player will be the active player.
  4. The active player tries to remember the first card of the Dream Pile and the first part of the Dream's narrative. Then, they reveal the top card.
  5. If the active player correctly remembers the next part of the Dream without being helped by other players: The Dream card is placed face up next to the Individual Score card. The team receives 2 points.
  6. If the active player needs help to remember: They can ask for help. Teammates who think they can remember should raise their hand. The active player can ask 1 teammate for help or try to remember on their own. Then, they must reveal the next face-down card.
  7. If the active player correctly remembered the next part of the Dream with the help of a teammate: The Dream card is placed face up next to the Cooperative Score card. The team receives 1 point.
  8. If the active player cannot remember the next part of the Dream, either individually or cooperatively: The Dream card is placed face up next to the Penalty card. The team receives -2 points.
  9. Important: If a player gives any clue or hint without the active player having asked, it will no longer be possible to place the Dream card next to the Individual Score card, even if the active player remembered on their own.
  10. After a card is placed next to the appropriate Score card, the Dream Pile is passed clockwise to the next player. He or she will be the next active player and must try to remember the next part of the Dream.
  11. This process continues until all Dream cards have been separated according to their score and everyone has tried to remember the entire Dream.

Actions and How to Play

Actions in Dream On are divided between the two phases of the game:

In the Dream Phase:

  • Start the Dream: The first player draws a Dream card from the top of the deck, places it face up next to the deck (creating the Dream Pile), and uses the image to start the Dream's story with a few words. Then, they start the timer.
  • Continue the Dream: Any player can play a Dream card from their hand, placing it face up on top of the Dream Pile. In doing so, the player must use a few words to connect the image on their card with the previous card, expanding the Dream's narrative.
  • Draw Card: After playing a Dream card, the player immediately draws a new card from the Dream deck to maintain 3 cards in hand.
  • Play Multiple Cards: A player can play multiple cards in sequence, as long as they draw a new card after each play to keep their hand at 3 cards.

In the Remember Phase:

  • Attempt to Remember Individually: The active player (who is holding the Dream Pile) tries to remember the next part of the Dream's narrative and the corresponding Dream card. If successful without help, the card is scored as Individual (+2 points).
  • Ask for Help: If the active player needs help to remember, they can ask. Teammates who think they can help raise their hand. The active player can choose a teammate to help or try to remember alone.
  • Attempt to Remember Cooperatively: If the active player and a teammate (if help was requested and accepted) correctly remember the next part of the Dream, the card is scored as Cooperative (+1 point).
  • Pass the Dream Pile: After a card is scored (whether Individual, Cooperative, or Penalty), the Dream Pile is passed to the next player clockwise, who becomes the new active player.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends after Phase 2: Remember, when all Dream cards from the Dream Pile have been separated according to their score (placed next to the Individual, Cooperative, or Penalty Score cards).

To count the points, sum the points of all cards:

  • Each card next to the Individual Score card is worth 2 points.
  • Each card next to the Cooperative Score card is worth 1 point.
  • Each card next to the Penalty card is worth -2 points.

The team's total score determines how well you remembered the dream:

  • 15 Points or Less: The images of your dreams quickly fade from your thoughts. You spend all day trying to remember what you dreamed.
  • 16-30 Points: Some sharp images float in your waking mind, but you can't put them in order.
  • 31-45 Points: You can reconstruct entire scenes from your dreams, which brightens the rest of your day.
  • 46-60 Points: What an incredible dream! Full of vivid images and packed with twists and turns. This is the kind of dream you'll never forget.
  • 61 Points or More: WOW! This is the best dream ever: one that everyone would want to have, one that can change destinies and even has the power to change the world! Be very proud of this dream!

Since Dream On is a cooperative game, there is no traditional win or loss condition, but rather an evaluation of the team's performance based on the score achieved.

Tips for Winning

  • Create a cohesive and memorable narrative: In the Dream Phase, try to connect your cards logically and creatively with the previous card. The easier it is for everyone to remember the story you created, the more points you will score in the Remember Phase.
  • Communicate carefully in the Remember Phase: If you are the active player and need help, ask. If you are not the active player, avoid giving hints or clues without being asked, as this can prevent the team from earning the 2 points from the Individual Score.
