About the game
What you do in a play session
Eclipse: Supernova is the first mini‑expansion for the celebrated Eclipse, adding a dose of cosmic chaos to the already deep 2‑6 player strategy game. The core concept revolves around Supernova sectors – unstable hexes that can explode at any time unless you invest in technology to keep them stable. When building the map, the two Supernova hexes are shuffled together with the other outer‑sector hexes, ensuring the threat’s location is always unpredictable. At the start of the Cleanup phase you roll two dice, add the result to the number of technologies the hex’s owner has on the lowest tech track, and compare it to the current round number. If the total is equal to or less than the round, the Supernova detonates, wiping out ships, structures, and influence discs, returning population cubes to their tracks and flipping the hex over to its inactive side.
The expansion also adds a Discovery Tile, shuffled into the regular discovery deck, providing fresh exploration options. Players with the Wormhole Generator technology may even use an exploded Supernova as a jump point, adding a tactical twist. The main component – the Supernova hexes – are easy to handle but have a huge narrative impact, forcing players to balance expansion, warfare, and tech research. As with the base game, resource management and timing of tech advances are crucial; now the pressure to avoid explosions can completely reshape the game flow. If you already enjoy the base game, Supernova offers a tension‑filled upgrade without dramatically extending playtime, keeping the 2‑6 player, roughly two‑hour experience intact. It’s perfect for fans of deep strategy who crave a bit more unpredictability in space.
