Step by step

Game Objective

Feljong is a game inspired by Riichi Mahjong, where the main goal is to form specific card combinations called melds. Each player must assemble 5 sets: 1 pair of identical cards (called eyes) and 4 groups of three cards, which can be sequences (Chi) or triplets (Pon). The game ends when a player completes their hand and declares the end of the round. After 4 rounds, the player with the most points wins.

Setup

  1. Distribute the 4 Level 1 cards and the Score Summary to the players.
  2. Give each player 30,000 points using the score markers.
  3. Shuffle the main deck into 4 piles and combine them into one.
  4. Set aside 14 cards to form the dead wall and reveal one card to indicate the Dora.
  5. Choose the Starting Player (who receives the East Wind card) and deal 13 cards to each player. The Starting Player receives an additional card.

Game Flow

The game proceeds in clockwise turns. On their turn, a player:

  1. Draws a card from the deck or another player's discard (for actions like Chi, Pon, or Ron).
  2. Discards a card, passing the turn.

When a player discards, the following may occur:

  • Tsumo: Another player draws a card from the deck and wins.
  • Chi: The next player forms a sequence with the discarded card.
  • Pon: Any player forms a triplet with the discarded card.
  • Ron: A player wins using the discarded card.

The priority order is: Ron > Pon > Chi.

Actions and How to Play

Main actions:

  • Chi: Form a sequence of 3 cards of the same suit (only with numbered cards).
  • Pon: Form a triplet of identical cards.
  • Ron: Win with a card discarded by another player.
  • Tsumo: Win with a card drawn from the deck.

Honors (Dragons and Winds) can only form triplets or pairs, not sequences.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends when:

  • A player reaches negative points.
  • All players have been the Starting Player once.

Scoring:

  • In Level 1, the winning player earns 1 Han for winning + 1 Han for each Dora or red Dora in their hand.
  • The Starting Player receives 50% more points when winning.
  • In case of Tsumo, the points are divided among the players. In Ron, the player who discarded the card pays alone.

Refer to the manual for details on the scoring table.

Tips to Win

  • In Level 2, prioritize forming Yakus like Riichi (closed hand), Yakuhai (triplet of Dragons/Winds), or Tan'yao (no terminal or Honor cards).
  • Avoid opening your hand with unnecessary Chi or Pon to keep options for closed Yakus.
  • Pay attention to the revealed Dora to maximize your points.
