Goal of the Game

In "Five Tribes: Whims of the Sultan", players compete for control of the 5 fabulous cities and work to satisfy the sultan's requirements. The game can be played with up to 5 players. The goal is to accumulate victory points, which are obtained by controlling the fabulous cities and by fulfilling the sultan's special requests, represented by the Sultan's Whim Cards. The more fabulous cities a player controls, the more points they score at the end of the game.

Setup

The game setup varies slightly depending on whether you are playing with only the base game or with the "The Artisans of Naqala" expansion.

General Setup (Always)

  • In a 3 to 5 player game, each player takes 8 camels and 1 turn marker of their color. In a 2 player game, each player takes 11 camels and 2 turn markers in pink or blue.
  • Each player takes 50 Gold coins (9 "5" coins + 5 "1" coins).
  • The offering order tracker and turn tracker, Resource cards, Genie cards (including the new ones), gold coins, palm trees, and palaces are positioned according to the original base game setup.
  • Take the players' turn markers and place them randomly on the offering order tracker. This will determine the initial order in which players will make their offerings.
  • Each player receives one tent of their color.

Setup Without "The Artisans of Naqala" Expansion

  • Mix the 6 location tiles from this expansion (5 fabulous cities, 1 great lake) with those from the main game. Place them randomly on the table, forming a 6x6 square (the board). Use the same orientation for all tiles to make reading easier.
  • Remove the 3 Sultan's Whim cards that have the "The Artisans of Naqala" symbol. Shuffle the remaining Sultan's Whim cards and place them face down in a pile near the board. Draw the top 5 cards and place them face up on each fabulous city.
  • Mix the meeples from the base game and this expansion into the bag. Then, take and drop them in random sets of 3 on each tile, EXCEPT on the Great Lake tile, which remains empty.

Setup With "The Artisans of Naqala" Expansion

  • Mix the 6 location tiles from this expansion with those from the main game.
  • Reveal 14 tiles randomly from this pile and add 6 tiles from "The Artisans of Naqala". Mix the 20 tiles and place them randomly on the table, forming a 4x5 rectangle.
  • Place the remaining 22 tiles around this grid to form a 6x7 grid (the board).
  • Place the mountains in the designated spaces on the workshop tiles.
  • Shuffle all Sultan's Whim cards and place them face down in a pile near the board. Reveal the top 5 cards and place them face up on each fabulous city.
  • Mix the meeples from the base game and both expansions into the bag. Then, take and drop them in random sets of 3 on each tile, EXCEPT on the Great Lake tile, which remains empty.
  • Shuffle the item tokens and stack them face down next to the board.

Note: If a tile is completely surrounded by mountains or isolated from the rest of the board because of the Great Lake and/or the Abyss, restart the setup, as all tiles must remain accessible.

Gameplay

Refer to the manual for details on this section.

Actions and How to Play

This expansion introduces new elements and modifies some interactions:

New Pieces

  • GREAT LAKE: It is a forbidden and impassable tile. There can never be meeples on it, during setup or during the game. At the end of the game, EACH palace or palm tree on a tile adjacent to the Great Lake tile (orthogonally or diagonally) is worth twice the amount of points it would normally bring (10 for a palace, 6 for a palm tree).
  • FABULOUS CITIES (5 tiles): Controlling fabulous cities can be a huge step toward victory. Three fabulous cities are considered blue tiles and two are considered red tiles when applying the builders' action or the tent effect. These color variations have no other effect on the game.
    • Action: When you finish your turn on a fabulous city, add the Sultan's Whim card to your hand, if there is one on the tile. If there is no card on the city, you receive nothing.
    • During the renewal phase, add a new Sultan's Whim card face up to cities that do not have one.

Sultan's Whim Cards

Each card shows a special request from the sultan. When you take a Sultan's Whim card:

  • If you already meet the requirements, place the card face up and immediately obtain the value of the gold coins shown on the card.
  • If you do not yet meet the requirements, keep the card in your hand. Later in the game, as soon as you fulfill the card's conditions, reveal it, place it face up, and gain the value of the gold coins.

All card effects are described on the summary sheet.

New Offering Order and Turn Order Trackers

The new trackers are used only in 5-player games. In the new turn order tracker, there are two spaces for the values of 1, 3, and 5 gold coins. Offering these values works the same way as the "0" space in the base game: the first player to offer one of these values places their turn marker on the lower space. The second player to choose that value places their turn marker on the first space of the same value, to make room for their marker and chooses this space to play before the "pursued" player. There are only two spaces per value, meaning each of these values is limited to two players.

New Genies

  • Kali: Each time you push an opponent's turn marker on the turn order tracker, receive 1 gold coin. Each time your turn marker is pushed by an opponent on the turn order tracker, receive 2 gold coins. Kali's power is active in all games.
  • Ganapati: Receive one gold coin every time you receive a Sultan's Whim card and 2 gold coins every time one of your opponents receives one.

End of Game and Scoring

At the end of the game, Sultan's Whim cards still in players' hands are simply discarded. They are worth nothing, but they do not bring any penalty.

Scoring is affected by the new elements as follows:

  • Fabulous Cities:
    • If you control 1 city, you score 5 points.
    • If you control 2 cities, you score 20 points.
    • If you control 3 cities, you score 45 points.
    • If you control 4 cities, you score 80 points.
    • If you control 5 cities, you score 125 points.
  • Great Lake: EACH palace or palm tree on a tile adjacent to the Great Lake tile (orthogonally or diagonally) is worth twice the amount of points it would normally bring (10 for a palace, 6 for a palm tree).

Refer to the manual for details on victory and defeat criteria.

Tips for Winning

  • Controlling fabulous cities is a huge step toward victory. Try to control as many as possible to maximize your points at the end of the game.
  • If one of the Sultan's Whim cards is really important to you, it may be an incentive to offer more during the offering phase to secure it early in the round before someone else takes it.
  • Watch out so that a single player does not control all the fabulous cities, as this can give them a significant advantage in scoring.
