Step by step

Goal of the Game

In Funocracy, the goal is to score the highest number of points through letter cards. The game is divided into three rounds, and the points accumulated throughout them will determine the winner. Remember: the more creative the answers, the better!

Setup

To start the fun, follow these steps:

  1. Each player receives a voting card, which has two sides: GOOD! (to agree) and MEHH... (to disagree).
  2. Separate the letter cards and the theme cards into different piles and shuffle them separately.
  3. At the start of each round, discard three letter cards without revealing which ones were discarded.
  4. Place the theme card pile horizontally and the letter cards vertically.
  5. Separate three theme cards and place them face down. Then, flip three letter cards face up.
  6. The youngest player starts the game.

Gameplay Flow

The game proceeds clockwise and consists of three rounds. The flow of a round works as follows:

  1. The first player of the round reveals the starting theme by flipping one of the theme cards.
  2. The player has up to 25 seconds to provide an answer that starts with one of the three letter cards available in the play area.
  3. If the answer is accepted: The player wins the letter card and the next player replaces one letter to the right of the others, continuing with the same theme.
  4. If the answer is challenged: A vote is opened among the other players.
  5. If no one can answer: If players go through three themes in sequence without an answer, the leftmost letter card is discarded and a new one is added to the right.

Round Transition: At the end of each round, the previous theme cards are discarded. For the second and third rounds, three new theme cards are drawn (without shuffling) and all letter cards are gathered, shuffled, and three are discarded again without being revealed. The player to the left of the one who finished the previous round starts the new round.

Actions and How to Play

During your turn, you must perform the following actions:

  • Answer: You must say a word that starts with one of the available letters within 25 seconds. If you cannot answer in time, you lose your turn and a new theme is revealed.
  • Challenge: Any player can say "MEHH..." and play their voting card in front of them to start a vote. The challenge must occur before the next player reveals another letter.

Voting: Players decide if the answer is valid (without external consultation). The player whose turn it is does not participate in the vote. The result is decided by majority:

  • Majority of "MEHH..." votes: The answer is invalidated. The player does not score, the letter card returns to the play area, and the game continues with a new theme (the letters remain the same).
  • Majority of "GOOD!" votes: The player scores and keeps the letter. A new letter is added to the right and the game continues with the same theme.
  • Tie: The decision favors the player whose turn it is.

Alternative Mode: In alternative mode, all letter cards are spread face up and players can choose any available letter to answer, maintaining the turn order.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends after the end of the third round, when all letter cards have been used.

Point Counting:
At the end of each round, each player sums the points from their earned letter cards. Each card is worth 1 to 3 stars. At the end of the third round, the results of the three rounds are added together to obtain the final score.

Tie-breaking Criteria:
The winner is the one with the highest total score. In case of a tie, the tie-breaking criteria follow this order:

  • The player with the most points in the third round wins.
  • If the tie persists, the player with the most points in the second round wins.
  • If there is still a tie, the victory is shared.
