If you’ve enjoyed the quirky Gloom family, the Gloom: Unfortunate Expeditions expansion will take the experience to the next level. It adds an extra player and, more importantly, 55 cards that introduce new Modifiers, Events, and Untimely Deaths, plus a new family of explorers who’ve faced misfortune around the globe. Featuring Colonel Bumpersnoot, now a bargain hunter, and Lady Bumpersnoot, who struggles with high society yet loves dinner parties, the expansion adds a macabre humor touch to the table.
The big splash is the Expedition mechanic: only one expedition can be in play at a time, and its rules affect all players while active. When you play an Untimely Death card with an expedition symbol, resolve the immediate effect and swap the current expedition for the one shown on the card. Some cards also trigger special effects if an expedition is already active, creating intriguing tactical decisions.
The set works seamlessly with the Unhappy Homes expansion, as the Towering Treehouse from the Bumpersnoot family is a residence card usable there. The expansion keeps the lighthearted style but adds depth by introducing the expedition dynamic that shifts the pace and strategy for everyone.
In terms of complexity, Gloom remains easy to medium, with a BGG weight of 1.8/5. The average playtime ranges from 30 to 40 minutes, perfect for quick sessions and dark humor playdates. If you love storytelling, dark humor, and cards that make you laugh and cry at the same time, this expansion is a must-have.
