About the game
What you do in a play session
At the close of the 18th century, the United States was swamped by waves of poor European immigrants seeking fresh chances. Eastern seaboard cities swelled, while endless plains and towering mountain ranges inland beckoned these pioneers into the unknown. In Go West!, each player becomes a shrewd entrepreneur profiting from wagon trains that trek across the continent toward the Pacific. The board is split into vertical strips – New England, East Coast, Great Plains, Midwest, West and California – and the goal is to place trade posts along the trail to gain influence as settlers move westward.
The game employs Action Points: each round you receive a limited pool of points to move merchants, erect posts, or play action cards from your hand. Hand Management is key, as the cards dictate which actions you can take and when. When wagons pass a region where you hold the majority, you collect resources or victory points, reflecting the Area Majority/Influence mechanic.
A play session moves from east to west in short turns, lasting about 45 minutes, and supports 2‑4 players. Rules are straightforward, the weight is light (2.2/5), and the learning curve is almost nonexistent, making it perfect for anyone wanting a thematic experience without heavy crunch. While the setting is historical, the focus lies on positioning competition and careful management of action points and cards. If you enjoy abstract strategy games with a dash of the Wild West, Go West! offers a quick, tactical and decision‑rich ride to fortune.
