About the game
What you do in a play session
Hnefatafl, also known as Viking Chess or simply Tafl, is a classic Nordic strategy game dating back to the 10th century. Each match pits two uneven forces against each other: the defenders, with a king and 12 soldiers, start in the centre of the board forming a cross, while the attackers place 24 soldiers around the perimeter. The defenders' goal is to escort the king to any of the four corner squares, which act as safe havens; the attackers aim to surround and block the king's escape. Pieces move like chess rooks—straight orthogonal lines—and are captured by "sandwiching" an opponent between two of your own pieces. Numerous rule variations exist, but the core remains a tactical duel where the imbalance of numbers creates constant tension. The game traces its ancestry to ancient versions such as the Roman Petteia and even earlier Greek and Egyptian board games, and it has inspired modern titles like Breakthru and Thud. Today Hnefatafl appears in traditional wooden sets, detailed miniatures, drawstring bags for storage, and digital platforms like Steam, Tabletopia, and Google Play, letting you face friends or an AI. With a typical playtime of about 20 minutes, the pace is brisk, yet the strategic depth ensures every move matters. If you love pure‑logic board games, Hnefatafl delivers a historic and tactical experience that still delights players of all ages.
