About the game

What you do in a play session

Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester revives the 2006 classic with a fresh, sharper look. The game seats 1‑5 Renaissance inventors competing to turn the master’s Codex ideas into real inventions. Each invention, ranging from simple to epic, demands materials, time, and a dash of genius. To achieve this you’ll hire apprentices, expand workshops, purchase Leonardo‑designed automata, and secure backing from the Council and sponsors. Worker placement is the core: every action – gathering resources, upgrading a workshop, or advancing an invention – occupies a limited space, creating fierce competition, especially in 2‑ or 3‑player games where tension has been boosted. A double‑sided board and double‑layered player boards allow long‑term strategy, while 40 invention cards now provide instant, once‑per‑round, or permanent effects, adding decision depth. The game runs over 7 rounds; the player with the most florins at the end wins. New features include expanded Council options (4 to 8), resources swapped for meeples, six personal objectives per player to help laggards, and fresh Lab/Academy functions in later phases. Premium components – wooden, glass and plastic pieces plus 12 clear storage containers – give the game a tactile, high‑quality feel. If you enjoy worker‑placement games with strong player interaction, a historic theme and plenty of replay value, Codex Leicester offers a rich, visually striking experience without overwhelming complexity.
