About the game
What you do in a play session
The "Inevitable Betrayal" card is a promotional intrigue bonus that appeared at the Dungeons & Dragons Experience Con 2012 when players tested the Lord of Waterdeep demo. Though it’s a collector’s item, it can be added to the Intrigue deck before the game starts, functioning exactly like any other intrigue card. The effect is direct and impactful: when played at Waterdeep Harbor, you choose an opponent, remove two gold and an adventurer from their tavern and place them in yours. Then the card is handed to the opponent, as if it were a malicious gift. This resource swap creates immediate tension and forces the opponent to rethink their gold-gathering strategy. Because it’s a promo card, it isn’t in the standard game, but the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion includes a copy with different artwork, allowing you to have two cards in the deck if you already own the original promo. To use it, simply ensure the card is in your Intrigue deck before the game begins; the tavern doesn’t need to be empty, just that the opponent has gold and adventurers available. The theft mechanic fits well into Waterdeep’s intrigue theme, where factions clash for resources and influence. If you love board games that blend politics, commerce, and a touch of RPG, this card offers a risky play that can swing the game in your favor when used wisely.
