Objective of the Game
In The Missing Expedition expansion for Lost Ruins of Arnak, players explore new temples, encounter mysterious events, and utilize unique leader abilities to uncover secrets. The expansion offers two modes: a standard game (1–4 players) or a campaign (solo/co-op). In both, players compete to earn the most points by researching, discovering sites, and using artifacts. The game ends after a set number of rounds, and the player with the highest score wins.
Preparation (Setup)
Standard Game Setup
- Mix new site tiles, encounter cards, and idols with the base game components (except in the campaign).
- Add the new research tracks (Waterfall Temple or Tree Temple) to the board.
- If using Expedition Leaders (Mechanic or Journalist), replace player boards and starting cards with their unique components.
- For simple leaders (base game only), use the alternate starting cards on page 10.
- Place waterfall tiles or hidden sites as specified by the chosen temple.
Campaign Setup
Keep expansion components separate. Follow the campaign book chapter-by-chapter.
Flow of the Game
The game follows the base rules of Lost Ruins of Arnak, with these additions:
- New Sites: Some sites trigger encounter cards when activated.
- Leader Abilities: The Journalist writes articles, while the Mechanic builds a machine with widgets.
- Temple Effects: The Waterfall Temple hides a site, while the Tree Temple offers idol chambers.
Each round, players take turns performing actions, then refresh cards and prepare for the next round.
Actions and How to Play
New Leader Abilities
Journalist:
- Write articles at sites by paying travel costs.
- Publish articles on newspaper tiles for bonuses (e.g., resources, idol slots).
- Rotate the machine wheel to activate silver/gold widget effects.
- Add gold widgets in rounds I, III, and V.
Encounter Cards
When drawn from a site, choose one effect:
- Resolve immediately (left option) and discard.
- Keep for later use (right option), then discard after activating.
Temple-Specific Rules
Waterfall Temple:
- Hidden site revealed when magnifying glass reaches it.
- Notebook bypasses the site via a shortcut.
- Place idols in chambers for rewards.
- Draw from face-down idol stacks when notebook reaches a chamber.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends after the final round (as per base rules). Points are earned from:
- Research tracks (including new temple tiles).
- Published articles (Journalist) or machine widgets (Mechanic).
- Idols, artifacts, and guardians.
The player with the highest total wins. In solo/co-op, compare to the rival’s score.
Tips for Winning
- Plan idol slots: Expedition Leaders can use blue idol slots out of order for unique effects.
- Prioritize encounter cards: Some offer powerful delayed actions—save them for critical turns.
- Use temple shortcuts: The Waterfall Temple’s hidden site and Tree Temple’s idol chambers can provide key advantages.
