Step by step
Game Objective
In Magna Roma: Dominus, Rome is in civil war. Each player controls legions and generals fighting for dominance over the empire's provinces. The objective is to conquer and maintain control over provinces, accumulating victory points through Dominus score tiles and city scoring. The player who finishes the game with the highest sum of victory points, including province bonuses, wins.
Setup
- Assemble the Dominus map board in place of the standard military board.
- Shuffle the Dominus score tiles and place one on each indicated slot on the board, face up.
- Shuffle the Settlement tokens face down and place one token on each province, except for the Rome province.
- Distribute components to players:
- 10 Legion meeples of each color (40 total).
- 1 General meeple of each color (4 total).
- 12 Settlement tokens (2 of each of the 6 types).
- 12 Dominus score tiles.
- Place one Legion meeple of each player in the Rome province.
Game Flow
The game follows the basic structure of the base game, with the following additions and changes:
- During their turn, the player can combine City tiles to create Military or Prestige symbols.
- With these symbols, the player can use the Dominus Action Table to deploy or move Legion meeples and General meeples on the province map.
- When moving a Legion or General to a province for the first time, the player reveals the province's Settlement token and immediately receives the indicated bonus. The token is then discarded.
- The Rome province does not score at the end of the game and cannot be controlled.
- When the game ends (as per the base game rules), all city scores are calculated first, followed by the province scoring described in the End Game and Scoring section.
Actions and How to Play
Deploy Legion and/or General Meeples
This action allows you to place one or two Legion meeples or one General meeple in the Rome province:
- When using the action, you receive 3 victory points and can choose a Beautification tile to place in your city.
- You gain 2 coins, 1 faith (advance 1 step on the Pantheon board), and 1 star (advance 1 space on one of your city's tracks).
- Depending on the symbol created (Military or Prestige), choose which units you wish to place. Units are placed in the Rome province.
- Note: the Rome province does not score at the end of the game and cannot be controlled.
Move Legion and/or General Meeples
This action allows you to move units to adjacent provinces (red lines or black dots). You can move:
- One Legion meeple or one General meeple if you combined a Military or Prestige symbol of different colors.
- Two Legion meeples, move two Legion meeples, move one Legion meeple and move another, or move one General meeple if you combined a Military or Prestige symbol of the same color.
Additional rules:
- Any province can hold any number of units.
- If you are the first player to move a unit into a province, reveal the Settlement token and gain its bonus immediately. Then, discard the token.
Deploy and Movement with Symbols
To use the deploy or movement action, you must have:
- A Military or Prestige symbol created from City tiles of different or the same color.
- For a General meeple, the symbol must be the same color as the City tile you are combining.
- You can use the Prestige symbol in the same way as the Military symbol.
End Game and Scoring
When the game ends (as per the base game rules), follow these steps:
- Calculate all city scores (according to the icon scoring table below).
- For each province, compare each player's power:
- 1 Legion meeple = 1 power point.
- 1 General meeple = 2 power points.
- Determine the power ranking:
- 1st place: player with the most power.
- 2nd place: second most powerful.
- 3rd place: third most powerful.
- Apply tie-breaking rules:
- Tie for 1st place: tied players receive the 2nd place score.
- Tie for 2nd place: tied players receive the 3rd place score.
- Distribute victory points according to the Dominus score tile connected to the province:
- 1st place: highest score.
- 2nd place: middle score.
- 3rd place: lowest score.
Example of city scoring (for each pair of icons or district):
- Pair of Lyre icons: 1st place 3, 2nd place 2, 3rd place 1.
- Pair of Column icons: 1st place 3, 2nd place 2, 3rd place 1.
- Pair of Column + Lyre icons: 1st place 3, 2nd place 2, 3rd place 1.
- Pair of Column + Mask icons: 1st place 3, 2nd place 2, 3rd place 1.
- Pair of Mask + Lyre icons: 1st place 3, 2nd place 2, 3rd place 1.
