Imagine you're at a masquerade ball where nobody is who they claim to be. In Mascarade, the rule is simple: you can be whoever you want... as long as no one can prove you're lying! Each player starts with a face-down character card, but the twist is that these identities are fluid. On your turn, you have three options: you can announce who you are to use that character's specific power, you can swap your card with another player's (doing that classic 'shuffle under the table' move to confuse everyone), or simply take a secret peek at your own card to confirm your current identity.
The stakes are high: if you claim to be the Duke, for example, and someone shouts 'I am the Duke!' and reveals the card, you lose your turn and must pay a fine to the tribunal. It's a game of pure psychology, memory, and, of course, a lot of bluffing. The goal is to collect 13 coins or be the wealthiest player when someone goes bankrupt. This second edition is even more robust, featuring 17 characters, blending the original base game content with the 2014 expansion. This means every game can have different dynamics depending on which characters attend the ball. It's the perfect choice for when your group wants something fast, chaotic, and full of laughter, where the strategy lies in tracking who holds which card while you try to deceive everyone else.
