Druids vs Beelzebub is the latest expansion for the Massive Darkness 2 series, released in 2021 and backed by Kickstarter. It introduces the new druid class, adding two heroes each with three animal shapeshift forms, plus a roaming monster – Beelzebub – that adds an extra challenge for the team. Druids stand out from necromancers by gathering vital energy from everything around them, turning plants, animals, and even demons into temporary allies. This "energy gathering" mechanic contrasts with the necromancers' pursuit of death, creating a clash of play styles and strategies.
The expansion keeps the cooperative core that defines the series, where players must unite against the Massive Darkness. Action points and dice rolling remain pillars, but now there’s the option to shift forms, adding an extra tactical layer: each form has distinct abilities, yet the druid retains mortal consciousness and can cast spells. The modular board remains a hallmark, allowing each scenario to be assembled uniquely, boosting replayability. Scenarios are split into missions, each with specific goals that can influence the next, creating a campaign feel.
With 1 to 6 players, the game usually lasts between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the campaign and player experience. Complexity is medium to high, as the group must manage action points, decide when to change forms, and coordinate against Beelzebub. The expansion comes with all necessary components: hero tokens, shapeshift tokens, ability cards, dice, miniatures, modular board, and the monster. Since the text is still in English, it’s recommended to use a translated spreadsheet or pre‑translated cards for non‑English speakers.
