About the game

What you do in a play session

Midgard: The Card Game – Heroes of the North arrives as the first expansion for the base game, adding 16 new Viking heroes, two event cards and 12 reward cards. Each hero joins the Jarl's ranks as a "Hero" that can be recruited by spending Renown, the game's prestige currency. When active, the hero provides two special abilities that the player may trigger at any point during their turn, as well as a defensive capability that kicks in during battles against opponents. These abilities range from resource boosts to effects that hinder rivals, adding an extra strategic layer to the hand management already present in Midgard. The expansion keeps the 60‑90 minute playtime for 2‑6 players, but the card board now features more tactile variety, with each hero sporting unique artwork and clear effect text. The two event cards introduce unexpected situations that can swing the game, while the reward cards give new scoring and army‑strengthening options. Thematically, Heroes of the North reinforces the Nordic and mythological atmosphere, letting players lead their clans to glory alongside legendary northern figures. If you enjoy the blend of pattern building and hand management, this expansion offers more critical decisions without steepening the learning curve. The extra component – the hero – acts like a tactical "wildcard" that can turn the tide at the right moment, making each match even more unpredictable and fun.
