Game Flow

The game follows the Order of Play indicated on each player board. All references to Step # refer to a specific step within this order. All servants rotate normally after use.

Specific tiles may alter the flow of play or introduce special events:

  • Alderley Hall: This is an experimental event tile. At the beginning of season 2, place this tile in the £800 market space (the tile originally in that space is returned to the bag). As other tiles are purchased, this tile slides left. When it reaches the £500 market space, the costume ball activates immediately (after a purchase at the conclusion of a player turn).
  • Art Gallery: This is a hybrid tile. It enters play on the side with a line underneath the stylised flower in the upper right. After purchase, place it in any improvement tile category except service. VP counts towards courtship(s) in that category.
  • Ice House: This tile is flipped each time it is used. It enters play on the side with a line underneath the tile flip icon.
  • Laundry Room: Before Step 4, you may place a female servant on the tile to refresh a casual guest from the discard pile, making them available for the current turn.
  • North Tower: This tile is flipped each time it is used. It enters play on the side with a line underneath the tile flip icon.
  • Still Room: You may place any servant (except the useful man) on this tile to allow them to be used twice on any future turn. The servant stays on the tile until it is either reclaimed (returned to Available Service) or used twice.
  • Walled Garden: During Step 5, you may place a cook to trigger a +2 reputation favour instead of the cook's normal abilities.

Actions and How to Play

Players interact with various tiles and guests using different mechanics. Below are the specific rules for certain tiles:

  • Art Gallery: Once played, you have two options: 1) Pay £200 to flip the tile to any of the other three non-service categories, or 2) Decline to pay £200 and flip the tile in the current organiser category (no new art, but a new group may view the existing art).
  • East-End Ha-Ha: On the monument side, you may, during Step 2, dismiss one guest each turn.
  • East Lawn: On the back side, use the d20 solitaire dice to determine which favour is enjoyed. The VP card favour is for a successful balloon launch; the reputation penalty indicates a catastrophic failure.
  • Garden Observatory: On the front side, use the d20 solitaire dice to determine the favour. The pound favour means no comet is discovered, but hours are spent in productive conversation. The reputation favour means a comet is sighted.
  • Grand Ballroom: This tile has a prestige rating of 7. In a standard game, a player board reputation of Max is required.
  • Horse Carriage: On the front side favour, if one Fairchild is available, place that card into the active hand. If two Fairchilds are available, place the card of your choice into the active hand.
  • Music Room: The young lady of the family permanently gains a +1 reputation favour. This is enjoyed when her card is played at an activity. If her admirer bonus is in effect, this +1 is in addition to the +2 bonus.
  • Parish Church: On the monument side, during Step 2, choose between £100 or 1 reputation.
  • Private Family Chapel: No personal service is required on the back side, yet favours are enjoyed.
  • Summer House: No service is required on the front side. Note that two family members may not attend the front side activity.
  • Village Fair Stall: Normal servant restrictions apply. On the monument side, during Step 2, you may decide to pay £100 to gain 1 reputation.
