About the game

What you do in a play session

If you love the idea of building a civilization but don't have 10 hours to spend on a single session, Olympos is exactly what you need. Designed by Philippe Keyaerts (the mind behind Small World), this game condenses the empire-building experience into much faster sessions without sacrificing strategic depth. You'll fight for control over Greece and the mysterious Atlantis, balancing raw military power with intellectual evolution.

The core of the game is the time track. Forget fixed turn orders; the player furthest back on the track always goes next. This creates a constant dilemma: do you take a simple action to move slightly and play again soon, or do you spend more time to perform a powerful action, risking your opponents taking multiple turns before it's your go again? Actions are split between Expansion and Development. Expanding means placing settlers on the map, conquering territories, and securing vital resources. Development happens on a separate board, where you invest in scientific discoveries (which grant new powers, like the phalanx for military dominance) or build architectural wonders to score victory points.

But it's not just about war and science; faith plays a crucial role. Your discoveries determine your level of piety. If you are the most pious player, the gods of Olympus may grant you generous blessings. If you are the least pious? Well, prepare for divine wrath, as the gods don't take neglect lightly. The best part is the high replayability: the discovery board and the active gods change every game, ensuring that no single strategy ever becomes dominant. It's a 'gamer's game' in a compact format, where managing your time is just as critical as managing your army.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

5 questions
Is the game too complex?
It's considered a 'gamer's game' due to the time track and overlapping mechanics, but it's manageable. Once you grasp the time logic, the flow is very smooth.
How long does a game take?
Typically between 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the player count and how much analysis paralysis hits the table.
Does it work well with 2 players?
Yes, it supports 2 to 5 players, and the territorial struggle remains tense even in a head-to-head match.
Does the mythology theme affect the gameplay?
Absolutely! The piety mechanic means the gods actively intervene, rewarding or punishing players based on their development choices.
Who would I recommend this game to?
Anyone who loves area control and civilization games but prefers dynamic, shorter sessions over the massive, day-long epics.
