About the game

What you do in a play session

Onitama: Light and Shadow arrives as the third expansion to the beloved Onitama, adding a fresh layer of secrecy to the martial‑tactics game. The star of the expansion is the Ninja, a pawn that moves hidden: while movement cards are revealed, the Ninja stays invisible until the player decides to strike, creating tense and surprising moments. The expansion provides two distinct ways to play. In "Way of the Shadow" both players control a Ninja, making the match perfectly symmetrical and forcing each to deduce the opponent's hidden moves. In "Way of the Light" one player uses the Ninja against a traditional Onitama master and students, creating an asymmetric duel where stealth meets the familiar card‑hand management. Rules are easy to pick up – just add the Ninja cards to the existing deck – but strategic depth rises, as hand management and pattern reading become even more critical. Components include new movement cards, Ninja miniatures, and a small marker to indicate hidden presence. In 15‑20 minutes, two players can explore these fresh dynamics, with a light weight (3/5) that fits quick sessions or as a supplement to a larger board‑gaming night. If you love tactical duels, enjoy a bit of bluff, and want to vary classic Onitama without extra complexity, Light and Shadow is a worthwhile addition.
