About the game
What you do in a play session
Order of the Gilded Compass is a dice‑placement game for 2‑5 players in which each participant plays a treasure hunter hoping to earn a seat in the most prestigious archaeological secret society. Each round the board shows five different locations – from museums to sunken sites – and nine special buildings that grant unique abilities. The trick is to assign your archaeologist dice to the right places at the right time. Each die’s value determines what you can do: collect artifacts, buy maps, hire specialists, dive for sunken treasure, or even call on the Illuminati for a little extra help.
The mechanics blend dice rolling, area majority/influence, set collection, and worker placement using the dice themselves as workers. The setup varies every game, ensuring a fresh mix of locations and buildings and boosting replay value. Some players may focus on auctions to snag rare items, while others dominate specific areas to gain influence bonuses. At the end, the player with the most treasure – represented by value tokens – receives the invitation to the Order and wins.
With a playing time of 30‑60 minutes and a light weight (2.3/5), the game is easy to learn yet offers enough strategic depth to keep seasoned gamers engaged. Components are colorful and well‑illustrated, with themed dice that reinforce the archaeological adventure vibe. If you enjoy dice games that mix planning with a dash of luck, Order of the Gilded Compass delivers a fun, thematic experience without overcomplicating things.
