Objective of the Game
Welcome to the world of Revive, where the ice is receding, and it's time to rebuild civilization! As leaders of unique tribes, your goal is to explore new lands, construct vital buildings, and populate various locations to shape the world according to your ideals. The game culminates when the last major artifact is claimed from the game board. At this point, you'll tally points from your collected artifacts, researched technologies, populated locations, and more. The player who best adapts and rebuilds, accumulating the most points, will claim victory!
Preparation (Setup)
Let's get this post-apocalyptic world ready for revival! Here’s how to set up your game:
General Setup
- Place the game board in the middle of the table.
- Shuffle the starting area tiles and place them face up on their indicated spaces in the center of the game board.
- Shuffle the remaining area tiles and place them face down on the other designated spaces.
- Shuffle the large location tiles and place one tile, with a random side facing up, on each of the four corner spaces of the game board. Return any unused large location tile to the box.
- Shuffle the citizen cards and form a face-down deck. Reveal cards and place them face up next to the deck. These, along with face-up machine tokens and slot modules, form the display.
- Sort the machine tokens by color into three piles next to the game board. Flip tokens from each pile face up to create the display.
- Shuffle the slot module tokens (referred to as slot modules) and place them in a face-down pile. Reveal tokens and place them face up next to the pile to create the display.
- Shuffle the crate tokens (referred to as crates) and place them in a face-down stack next to the game board.
- Place the energy markers (referred to as energy) in a supply next to the game board.
- Put the action cubes near the game board.
- Make a stack of the minor artifacts and place the end game tile on top.
- Place the major artifacts face up on the crater area on the game board. Use only artifacts marked with your number of players (e.g., for 3 players, use artifacts marked "+", "+" and "+"). Return any unused major artifacts to the game box.
Player Setup (Per Player)
Each player chooses a color and takes the following components:
- One player board, placed in front of you.
- One random tribe board, placed with the sun side facing up to the left of your player board.
- 4 small buildings and 4 large buildings, placed on the dedicated spaces on your tribe board.
- 12 population figures (meeples), placing one on each population icon on your tribe board.
- 2 pawns: one as a point marker on space 0 of the point track, and one as a hibernation marker on the lowest space of the hibernation track.
- 8 progress markers: one on each of the 4 reward spaces along the machine tracks, and one on each of the 4 spaces at the bottom of your tribe board.
- 4 resource markers, one on the bottom space of each resource track on your player board.
- One grey, green, and yellow machine track marker, placed on space 0 of each respective machine track.
- One energy token from the supply, placed in your energy storage.
- One switch token, placed in the indicated slot on your player board and slid up to the "unused" position.
- A random set of starting citizen cards (marked with an 'S' on the back). All your cards should have the same letter (A, B, C, or D) on the front. Shuffle these cards and place 3 face down to the right of your player board (your resting area). Place the remaining 3 cards face up below your tribe board (your active area).
- One random artifact card. Keep it secret from other players.
- One player aid card.
Starting Resources
Determine the starting player randomly. Then, players gain starting resources based on their turn order:
- Starting player: Advances their leftmost resource marker one space (1 crystal).
- Second player: Advances their two leftmost markers one space (1 crystal + 1 gear).
- Third player: Advances their three leftmost markers one space (1 crystal + 1 gear + 1 book).
- Fourth player: Advances all four of their resource markers one space (1 crystal + 1 gear + 1 book + 1 food).
The Game Turn
Players take turns in clockwise order. On your turn, you have two main choices:
- Perform up to 2 actions.
- Hibernate.
You may perform two different actions or the same action twice. If you cannot or do not want to take at least 1 action, you must hibernate.
In addition to your main actions, you can always perform any number of free actions on your turn: Trade crystals for other resources, Activate machines, and Open crates.
Available Actions
Here's a breakdown of the actions you can take:
1. Play a Card
Take a card from your active area and tuck it into a vacant card slot on your player board.
- If played in one of the two top slots, gain the effect shown on the top part of your card.
- If played in one of the two lower slots, gain the effect shown on the lower part of your card.
- Slot Modules: When you play a card, check all modules in that slot. Each module is activated if it shows the color of the played card.
- Slot Symbol: Some cards have a slot symbol, allowing you to play another card in that slot later. When you do, all cards in this slot matching the new card's color are reactivated.
- Common Card Effects:
- Activate your tribe ability. This also moves a progress marker to your progress track.
- Gain a slot module OR activate your tribe ability.
- Gain the shown resource.
- Trade a basic resource (gear, book, food) for any other basic resource, up to 3 times.
- Take a slot module from the display and place it on your player board, then replenish the display.
- Advance 1 space on the machine track of the indicated color.
2. Use Your Switch Token
Slide your switch token down to the "used" position. Gain any one basic resource (not a crystal). This action cannot be used again until your switch token is moved back up (usually when you hibernate).
3. Explore
Choose a face-down area tile on the game board. Pay the cost for range and the cost shown on the back of the chosen tile. You cannot pass through other unexplored area tiles.
- Gain the points shown on the back of the tile.
- Recruit a new citizen card from the display or the top of the deck, placing it face up in your active area. Refill the display.
- Flip the chosen area tile face up and rotate it as you wish.
- If any spaces on the newly flipped tile are adjacent to buildings owned by any player, those players immediately gain the rewards from those spaces.
Range: When exploring, building, or populating, you must pay for range. Initially, range is counted from the chasm. Once you place a piece (building or population figure) on the board, range is counted from your nearest piece. Pay 1 food for each space you move through between your origin and target. You can count range through occupied spaces but not through unexplored area tiles.
4. Populate
Choose a location space on the game board you haven't populated. Place a population figure from your tribe board onto it. Pay for range and the cost of the action:
- The action cost is the number of books shown on the technology from which the population figure is taken.
- Additionally, pay 1 book to each other player who already has a population figure in that location.
- The first time you populate, you must use the population figure from the lowest technology on your tribe board, unlocking it and granting you a unique ability. Subsequent population actions must unlock technologies connected to an already unlocked one.
- Large locations are populated similarly. If you populate a large location, you also gain the points shown at the end of the game.
5. Build
Choose a vacant sand space to build on. Pay for range and the cost of the building (2 gears for a small building, 3 gears for a large building).
- Rewards:
- If adjacent to terrain (forest/mountain/field), advance the corresponding machine track marker(s) one space per terrain space. Large buildings double this reward.
- If adjacent to a crystal, gain 1 crystal resource. Large buildings double this reward.
- If adjacent to a new water space (one you haven't claimed a reward from before), take the shown reward.
- Buildings can only be built on sand, and only one building per space.
- If another player explores an area tile revealing new terrain or water adjacent to your existing building, you immediately gain the reward from that new space.
Free Actions
- Trade Crystals: At any time, convert crystals to other basic resources (gears/books/food).
- Use a Machine: At any time, spend 1 energy from your energy storage to activate an unlocked machine and gain its immediate effect. The machine cannot be activated again until the energy is removed (usually when you hibernate).
- Open a Crate: At any time, open a closed crate to gain its immediate effect. Keep opened crates next to your player board.
Hibernate
Instead of performing actions, you can choose to hibernate. This is mandatory if you cannot or do not want to perform at least 1 action.
When hibernating, perform these steps:
- Return all energy from your machines to your energy storage.
- Take all cards from your resting area and place them face up in your active area.
- Take all played cards from your card slots and place them face down in your resting area.
- Slide your switch token up to the "unused" position.
- Advance your hibernation marker one space. Gain the reward shown to the right of your current space or any space below on the hibernation track.
Important: When you move to the 5th space on the hibernation track, you must immediately remove one major artifact of your choice from the game board (return it to the box). If this was the last major artifact, you gain the end game tile and trigger the end game.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when a player takes the last major artifact from the game board. That player also takes the end game tile. After their turn concludes, all other players take one final complete turn before scoring begins.
If any player is supposed to gain an artifact after the last major artifact has been taken, they instead take a minor artifact (worth 3 points).
Final Scoring
All players tally their purple points. During end game scoring, players do not gain bonuses from moving along the scoring track.
Each player counts the following points:
- The lowest visible points on their progress track.
- Points on unlocked technologies on their tribe board.
- Points from each large location where they have a population figure.
- If you unlocked the end game card bonus on a machine track: Gain 3 points per card of the shown color (not including starting cards!).
- 5 points to the player with the end game tile.
- 3 points for each minor artifact (artifacts collected after game end was triggered).
- 1 point for each 3 remaining resources (rounded down).
- Points from the artifact card and major artifacts:
- Score all three categories shown on your artifact card once.
- Then, score each category one additional time for each major artifact of the indicated color you collected.
The player with the most points wins! Ties are broken in favor of the player with the most remaining unscored resources. If still tied, the player who has advanced furthest on their three machine tracks combined wins. If the tie persists, tied players share the victory.
Tips for Winning
- Resource Management is Key: Pay close attention to your resource tracks. Crystals are incredibly versatile, allowing you to convert them into any basic resource. Don't be afraid to use them strategically to unlock crucial actions or technologies. Remember, discounts cannot reduce a cost below 1, so plan accordingly.
- Optimize Your Card Plays and Slot Modules: Playing cards effectively is central to your engine. Consider which card slots activate which slot modules, especially those with activation symbols. Reactivating cards in a slot with a matching-colored new card can lead to powerful combos. Don't forget that you can discard modules to make space for new ones, adapting to your current needs.
- Strategic Exploration and Building: When exploring, building, or populating, carefully consider your range. Placing your first pieces strategically can minimize future food costs. Also, remember that new terrain or water spaces revealed adjacent to your existing buildings can grant immediate rewards, so keep an eye on what other players are exploring!
