About the game

What you do in a play session

Roll for the Galaxy: Ambition takes the galaxy to a new level, adding 14 new factions, 7 home worlds, and 5 game tiles that change the dynamics of every match. What really makes the expansion shine are the two new types of dice – the Leader and Entrepreneur – which bring double‑phase rules and the ability to return the die to the cup. This speeds up the start of the game and creates opportunities for phase reconfiguration that were never seen before. Each player starts with a Leader die instead of a home die, giving an extra push in pace. Leader and Entrepreneur dice have faces showing two phase symbols; if the assigned phase doesn’t happen but the other does, the die automatically shifts. Other faces have a dollar sign with the phase symbol, allowing the die to go back to the cup when used on the correct phase instead of staying in the citizenry. When a Leader die is used to Consume, it always matches the world’s color, while Entrepreneur dice never match any world, forcing players to think of alternative strategies.

The 20 objective tiles are a strategic addition: six are chosen randomly each game and, when achieved, award 2‑5 Talent counters. These counters can be used as one‑shot workers that, if used for Consume, always match the world. If the phase doesn’t occur, the counters stay in play, allowing conditional assignments. At the end, unused Talent counters are worth 1 victory point each, giving a late‑game bonus that can turn the tide.

The expansion keeps the essence of Roll for the Galaxy – deck building, dice, and worker placement – but adds layers of strategy with variable phases, unique player powers, and a new layer of objectives that require long‑term planning. If you already master the base game and want more challenge, Ambition offers exactly that: more factions, more dice, and more reasons to dive into the cosmic race.

Playtime stays 30‑60 minutes, 2‑5 players. The learning curve rises slightly due to the new double‑phase rules and Talent counter management, but it’s not so complex that casual players can’t enjoy it. The expansion is perfect for those seeking more depth in an already well‑balanced game, but may be a bit heavy for those who prefer quick, low‑layered play.
