About the game

What you do in a play session

In the year 2179 Earth teeters on collapse: pollution, dwindling resources, and a bleak outlook dominate the planet. A hopeful band of explorers looks to Mars for clues, hoping the ruins of ancient alien societies can offer salvation. In Ruins of Mars up to four players race to build their own arsenal of knowledge by decoding Martian languages and rediscovering alien technologies. The board features five locations, each covered by a set of common action tiles placed randomly. On your turn you pick a location, optionally pay to swap a tile from an adjacent spot, resolve the action shown by the tiles underneath, and optionally replicate an alien tech by spending resources. Technologies come in three tiers and multiple classifications, granting special abilities that shape later turns. As you progress you accumulate radiation, which can hurt your final score, so managing it is crucial. The game ends when a player fills the technology grid or when three language markers reach the top, signalling linguistic mastery. Final scoring hinges on tech points, language mastery, and radiation penalties. Ruins of Mars blends resource management, variable player powers, and end‑game bonuses, all wrapped in a mancala‑style tile redistribution that keeps the table lively. Perfect for fans of light sci‑fi, exploration, and strategic depth without overwhelming complexity.
