About the game

What you do in a play session

In Rune Stones, you step into the role of an aspiring druid aiming to prove your worth to claim the throne. To achieve this, you'll need to master the art of summoning magical creatures and forging powerful artifacts. The game revolves around a clever multi-use card mechanic: each card has a number and can be used to generate spell power or acquire new cards. The catch is that when you play two cards, the one with the higher number is permanently removed from the game, while the other goes to your discard pile. This demands careful planning to avoid losing your most valuable cards!

Your goal is to collect precious gems, which will be used by dwarves to craft artifacts of various colors. By combining two or more artifacts of different colors, you forge a Rune Stone. These stones not only grant valuable points at the end of the game but also provide permanent abilities that can aid your journey, such as helping acquire more gems or artifacts. The decision of when to create a Rune Stone is crucial: do you focus on gaining useful abilities early to speed up your progress, or do you hoard more artifacts to generate more points in the end? The first druid to reach 65 points triggers the end of the game, and the player with the most points at the end of the round is crowned the winner.

Rune Stones engagingly combines deck-building with hand management. On each turn, you can choose between summoning new creatures, playing cards for resources and points (remembering the higher card's permanent discard!), or spending your gems to forge artifacts. It's a game with a smooth learning curve, ideal for those who enjoy strategy with a touch of fantasy and mechanics that reward long-term planning.
