How to Play Scythe: Modular Board

Game Objective

The Scythe modular board adds variety to the base game, allowing the map and faction locations to change with each play. The main objective remains the same: players control factions in a post-war world, seeking to expand their territory, build structures, and achieve supremacy through strategy and resource management.

Preparation (Setup)

1. Randomly select one side of the double-sided board.
2. Position the modular tiles in the designated areas of the board, ensuring that lakes are not adjacent to faction bases (if this happens, flip the tile to the other side).
3. Place a faction base tile on each corresponding hexagon, regardless of the number of players. Refer to the manual for details on expansions such as The Rise of Fenris.
4. Randomly distribute the player boards and choose factions in descending order (starting with the highest number). The player with the lowest number on their board will be the first player.

Specific observations:

• The player with the Industrial board cannot choose the Rusviet faction.
• The Crimean faction retains its Wanderer ability even in games with 6-7 players.

Tips for Winning

• When choosing your faction, consider its Traverse ability, especially access to resources like metal (for sending mechs) and wood (for building the Mine).
• In games with the Automa, be careful with modular setup, as it may not create natural barriers like water, leaving you vulnerable to attacks.
• Experienced players can deliberately challenge themselves with risky faction placements.
