About the game
What you do in a play session
Welcome to 796 AD Britain, a land in turmoil! Viking raiders are making their mark, paganism is giving way to Christianity, and the four major Anglo-Saxon kingdoms – Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, and East Anglia – are locked in a constant power struggle. Alliances are forged and broken, diplomacy is rampant, and the ultimate goal is singular: to claim the title of Bretwalda, the ruler of all Britain.
In Sovereign: Bretwalda, you take the reins of one of these kingdoms, each with its own unique traits and powers. To emerge victorious, a strong army alone won't suffice. You'll need to control key strategic areas on the board, complete secret objectives known only to you, and construct special buildings that grant unique advantages. To achieve this, the game challenges you to manage resources like taxes, develop your kingdom, employ your diplomatic skills, mobilize your armies, and lead them into epic battles. Every decision matters, as each season – and the game lasts a maximum of 12 – allows only two out of four available actions. Will you opt for slow economic and technological development, building solid alliances? Or will you prefer to assemble a mighty army and advance swiftly to conquer lands and riches? The choice is yours, and the fate of Britain rests in your hands!
