Goal of the Game
In Sparks, players take on the role of manufacturers trying to build robots and upgrade their factories. The goal is to accumulate as many points as possible. Victory is decided by the player with the highest score at the end of the game.
Setup
To set up the table, follow these steps:
- Place the score board and the junkyard in the center of the table.
- Shuffle the bonus tiles and place one token face up on each bonus space on the score board.
- Separate the upgrade tiles by type and place them in separate piles. Randomly place one pile in each of the designated spaces on the junkyard. If there are piles that will not be used, return them to the box.
- Place the cogs and the sparks in two piles next to the board. >
- Shuffle the robot cards and the assistant cards separately and place them in face-down piles next to the board.
- Place all the dice inside the dice bag.
- The goal tiles are not needed for the first game.
- Each player receives:
- One player board.
- Score markers in the player's color. Place them to the left of the score board, one marker off each score track.
- A set of production tiles. Place them above your player board.
- One starting spark for your storage on the player board.
- One level marker. Place it on the lowest space of the factory level track on your player board.
- Each player draws 3 robot cards. Choose 2 to place in the assembly line spaces below your player board and return the last one to the bottom of the robot cards pile.
- Each player draws 3 assistant cards and keeps them in their hand.
- The player considered "most likely to be a robot" receives the first player marker.
Game Flow
The game is divided into rounds, and each round consists of turns where players act as the active player. The game ends when all players have been the active player four times and all production tiles have been played.
Turn Structure
- Start of Turn: The active player discards any remaining dice in the junkyard and the junkyard is refilled (from left to right) with 4 dice drawn from the dice bag.
- Active Player Action: The active player chooses one of their remaining production tiles and places it in the junkyard, above the dice. Then, the player takes the number of dice indicated on their production tile (from either the left or right side of the junkyard) and applies any additional tile effect.
- Other Players' Action: The other players (clockwise) each take 1 remaining die from the junkyard (from the left or right side). In 4-player games, the non-active player takes 2 dice from the same side.
- Action Phase: All players use their dice, cogs, and sparks simultaneously to perform actions.
- End of Turn: After actions, if someone has completed a robot, they must refill their assembly line. Players may store a maximum of 1 die in their storage for the next round. The player to the left of the current active player becomes the new active player.
End of Round
When all players have completed their turns and the turn returns to the first player, all players recover the sparks from their power boxes to their storage. The first player starts the next round.
Actions and How to Play
Players can perform the following actions as many times as they want and in any order:
Main Actions
- Upgrade factory: Place a die on an available space in the upgrade section of your player board (the die color must match the color of the space). If the sum of the dice in the upgrade section reaches or exceeds the value above your current level, you level up, advance the level marker, and gain the reward. After that, discard the dice from the upgrade section.
- Build robot: Place a die on an empty space of a robot in your assembly line (must match the color/value of the space). If the last space is completed, the robot is ready: advance your corresponding score marker, receive immediate rewards, and place the robot to the right of your player board.
- Activate a power box: If you have a completed robot with a power box, use a spark from your storage to activate its effect. Each power box only accepts one spark at a time.
Additional Actions
- Sell die: Place a die in the discard pile and receive 1 cog. This can be done at any time.
- Change a die value: Pay 1 cog to increase or decrease a die's value by 1. It is not possible to change values above 6 or below 1.
- Ignore a color requirement: Pay 2 cogs to ignore the color when placing a die.
- Recruit an assistant: Pay cogs to play an assistant card from your hand (the cost increases with each card played).
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when all players have completed four turns as the active player and all production tiles have been used.
Scoring is calculated as follows:
- Score Tracks: Each marker on the score tracks is worth the points indicated above the track.
- Factory Level: Your factory level value multiplied by the number of assistant cards played.
- Assistant Cards: Points indicated in the upper right corner of each played card.
- Upgrade Tiles: Points indicated on your upgrade tiles.
- Robot Sets: 5 points for each set of four robot cards completed with different colors.
- Cogs: 1 point for every 3 cogs you possess.
- Goal Tiles (if applicable): Points for each completed goal tile.
In the event of a tie, the winner is the one with more cogs. If a tie persists, the player with the higher factory level wins. If there is still a tie, the player with the most completed robots wins. If the tie continues, the players share the victory.
