About the game

What you do in a play session

If you thought the original StarCraft board game was intense, get ready to level up with the Brood War expansion! This gem dives headfirst into the events of the video game expansion, bringing an even more twist-filled storyline. The Zerg hive is in shambles, with internal fighting running rampant, while the Protoss try to pick up the pieces and rebuild Aiur. On the other side, Terran Emperor Mengsk I, already in total control, has to deal with two ticking time bombs: Kerrigan, the Zerg Queen of Blades he betrayed, and a sinister conspiracy right in his own backyard.

Brood War doesn't hold back on new content: get ready for a ton of brand-new units, planets to conquer, strategic orders, advanced technologies, and much more. The big deal here is the new rules for Leadership Cards, which add a special flavor and customize each faction with devastating powers. Oh, and there are Heroes! Super-powered units with abilities that can instantly turn the tide of battle. And for those who enjoy a story, Scenario modes bring narrative-based missions, offering a new way to play, whether you're saving the Dark Templars or trying to destroy the Zerg Overmind. It's more StarCraft, more complexity, and more fun for the dedicated fans!

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

6 questions
Do I need the base game StarCraft: The Board Game to play?
Absolutely! The Brood War expansion adds content and rules, but the board and main components of the base game are essential to play.
How many players does this expansion support?
The expansion maintains the player count of the base game, which is 2 to 6 players. It also introduces team-based play, which can be quite interesting with larger groups.
Does the game become much more complicated with the expansion?
Yes, the complexity increases a bit. New units, cards, and game modes add more options and strategies, requiring a bit more time to master everything.
What are the main new components?
The expansion brings new unit miniatures, additional planets for the modular board, Leadership Cards to customize factions, powerful Hero cards, and components for scenario modes.
Is it worth it for someone who hasn't played the video game?
Absolutely! Although the expansion follows the video game's story, the rules and gameplay are very solid on their own. You'll enjoy the strategy and combat even without knowing the universe deeply.
Is the game cooperative or competitive?
The base game and expansion are primarily competitive, but the expansion introduces team-based play, where you can team up against other players, adding a cooperative element to the competition.
