Picture this: the devastating 1755 earthquake has just swept through Lisbon and much of Portugal's southern coast. The nation needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, and where there is chaos, there is business opportunity! Enter William Stephens, a shrewd British businessman who realized that the demand for window glass skyrocketed during the national reconstruction. In Stephens, you take on the role of a master glassmaker competing to become the most influential figure in town—right after Stephens himself, of course!
The game is a strategic race to expand your influence and wealth. You'll need tight planning to develop your businesses, invest in new ventures, and generate jobs to keep the gears turning. The action selection mechanism is quite engaging: you must decide whether to focus on activating the great Stephens factory or to prioritize your own personal investments. It's a constant balancing act between market needs and your empire's requirements.
Tension builds as time slips away. The game won't last forever; the historical timer is the arrival of Napoleonic forces in the region. Once the troops arrive, the scoring ends, and the player with the most prestige is declared the winner. If you enjoy economic management games with a touch of history and polished worker placement mechanics, get ready to rebuild a nation (and profit immensely while doing it)!
