Step by step

Objective of the Game

In Takenoko: Chibis, players continue to cultivate bamboo and care for the pandas in the imperial bamboo plantation. The expansion introduces a female panda, Miss Panda, and her babies, adding new ways to score points and interact with the game. The ultimate goal remains to complete various Objective cards to earn the most Victory Points.

Preparation (Setup)

To set up Takenoko: Chibis, follow these steps:

  1. Shuffle the 6 new Plot tiles (marked with the symbol symbol) with the Plot tiles from the Takenoko base game.
  2. Shuffle the new Objective cards with those from the Takenoko base game, keeping them categorized by the color of their backs (Plot, Gardener, and Panda).
  3. Place the Baby Panda tokens and the Miss Panda miniature near the players, forming a general supply.
  4. Ensure the following components are available:
    • 1 Miss Panda miniature
    • 9 Baby Panda tokens (3 green, 3 yellow, and 3 pink)
    • 17 additional Bamboo sections
    • 18 Objective cards (6 Plot, 6 Gardener, 6 Panda)
    • 6 Plot tiles (with the symbol symbol)

Actions and How to Play

Miss Panda

Miss Panda is a new miniature representing a female panda in the imperial bamboo plantation. Unlike the Panda and the Gardener, Miss Panda does not start on the board.

  • Placing Miss Panda: She appears when a player places a new Plot tile (with the symbol symbol) into play. Miss Panda is immediately placed on this new Plot tile.
  • Moving Miss Panda: Miss Panda moves from one Plot tile to another when a new Plot tile with the symbol symbol is added to the plantation. Generally, Miss Panda moves like the Panda. When performing a Move action, the player MUST CHOOSE between moving the Panda or Miss Panda.
  • Miss Panda's Role: When Miss Panda finishes her movement on a Plot tile, she does not eat bamboo. However, she can give birth to a new Baby Panda. If, after moving, Miss Panda is on the same Plot tile as the Panda, the player who moved Miss Panda may return one bamboo section of any color to the supply to take a Baby Panda token of the corresponding color. This only happens if the encounter occurs after Miss Panda's movement, not the Panda's.
  • Movement Clarification: With the Move action, the Panda moves only in straight lines and at least one Plot tile. If the Weather die shows the weather symbol symbol, Miss Panda moves to any Plot tile in the plantation.

Baby Pandas

There are 9 Baby Panda tokens, three for each color (green, yellow, and pink). The back of each Baby Panda token has one of three bonuses:

  • Taking a Baby Panda: When a player takes a Baby Panda token of a certain color, they choose it from the supply and immediately apply its corresponding bonus.
  • Bonuses:
    • Irrigation: The player may immediately take an Irrigation channel from the supply.
    • Improvement: The player may immediately take an Improvement token of their choice from the supply.
    • Change Objective: The player may immediately return an Objective card from their hand to the bottom of its corresponding deck and replace it with the top Objective card of a deck of their choice.
  • Bonus Availability: Each bonus is available once per color. There are 3 Baby Panda tokens of each color. Once the last Baby Panda token of a color is taken, players cannot make a Baby Panda of that color for the rest of the game.

New Objectives

The expansion introduces new types of Objective cards:

  • Plot Objectives: To complete these objectives, the central Plot tile MUST be one of the 6 with the symbol symbol, and the 2 neighboring Plot tiles MUST be of the color shown. All Plot tiles must be irrigated.
  • Gardener Objectives:
    • Some require a number of irrigated Plot tiles, at least equal to the number indicated, within the bamboo plantation.
    • Others require at least one 2-section, one 3-section, and one 4-section bamboo of the displayed color to be present in the bamboo plantation.
    • Some require a minimum number of bamboo sections of at least two segments in the bamboo plantation.
  • Panda Objectives: To complete these objectives, players must have the displayed bamboo sections in their "eaten bamboo supply" and return them to the supply when the Panda is on the Pond tile (this can be either the base game's or the expansion's). If the Panda is on the Pond tile at the start of a player's turn, they can complete such objectives. The player does not need to move the Panda to a Pond tile on their turn.

New Plot Tiles

All new Plot tiles follow the same placement rules as those in the base game. They must be placed next to the initial Pond tile, or next to at least two other Plot tiles. All new Plot tiles have the symbol symbol.

  • Kamis Garden (1 Green, 1 Yellow, 1 Pink):
    • If the Gardener moves to a Plot tile next to the Kamis Garden, bamboo of the corresponding color grows in the Kamis Garden.
    • If the Panda moves to the Kamis Garden, the player chooses only one bamboo section to eat, of the color of their choice among those available.
    • If the Weather die shows Rain and the player wants to apply it to the Kamis Garden, only one bamboo section of the player's chosen color is added.
    • This Plot tile counts as a Plot tile of all three colors for Plot Objective cards.
    • It is possible to place an Improvement token on the Kamis Garden. The effect applies to all three bamboos.
  • Sacred Hills:
    • When the Gardener stops on the Sacred Hills Plot tile, one bamboo section grows on every irrigated Plot tile of the same color, not just adjacent ones.
    • It is possible to place an Improvement token on the Sacred Hills Plot tile, according to the base game rules.
  • Ethereal Pond: This Plot tile has the same properties as the central Pond tile of the base game:
    • All neighboring Plot tiles are automatically irrigated.
    • Irrigation networks can start from here.
    • The various miniatures can pass through or end their movement here.
    • No bamboo grows here.
    • This Plot tile does not have a specific color.
  • Gardener's Hut: When the Gardener stops on this Plot tile, the player may immediately draw the top card of each Objective card deck. The player chooses one card to keep in their hand. The other two are returned to the bottom of their respective decks.

Variations

The following variations can be played with or without this expansion:

  • Gourmet: The Panda cannot eat the bottom sections of bamboo, only the upper sections.
  • Variety: At the end of the game, each set of different Objective card categories (Plot / Gardener / Panda) gives 3 additional points.

End of Game and Scoring

Each player earns 2 Victory Points at the end of the game for each Baby Panda token they possess.
