Welcome to Takenoko: Your Guide to Zen Gardening and Panda Feeding!
Greetings, esteemed gardeners! Ready to dive into the tranquil yet strategic world of Takenoko? As your friendly neighborhood SEO expert and editor at BoardGameBot, I'm here to walk you through the ins and outs of cultivating bamboo, irrigating plots, and, of course, keeping a very hungry panda happy. Let's get those green thumbs ready!
Objective of the Game
In Takenoko, you've been entrusted with a most delicate and important task by the Japanese Emperor: caring for a sacred giant panda, a gift from the Chinese Emperor. Your mission? To establish and maintain a thriving bamboo plantation for this adorable, yet ravenous, creature. You'll cultivate various land plots, ensure they're properly irrigated, and grow three different species of bamboo (green, yellow, and pink) with the help of the Imperial gardener.
The player who best manages their land plots, grows the most bamboo, and cleverly feeds the sacred panda will earn the most victory points by completing various objective cards. Ultimately, the player with the highest score will win the game and receive the Emperor's congratulations!
Preparation (Setup)
Let's get our garden ready! Here's how to set up your game of Takenoko:
- Place the central pond tile in the middle of your playing area.
- Place the gardener and the panda miniatures directly on the pond tile.
- Shuffle the remaining land plot tiles and form a face-down draw pile.
- Create a general reserve by placing the irrigation channels and improvement tokens (sorted by type) next to the plot draw pile.
- Take the Emperor card and set it aside for now.
- Sort the remaining objective cards into three separate categories: Plot Objectives, Gardener Objectives, and Panda Objectives. Shuffle each category individually to form three face-down draw piles.
- Each player receives their own individual board and 2 action tokens.
- Each player draws one objective card from each of the three categories (Plot, Gardener, Panda). Players can look at their objectives but must keep them hidden from others.
- The tallest player gets the honor of starting the game!
The Turn of Play
Turns proceed clockwise. When it's your turn, you'll perform two main steps in order:
1. Determine Weather Conditions
Important: The weather die only comes into play from the second round onwards. For the very first round, skip this step!
Roll the weather die and apply its effect:
- Sun: You gain an additional action! This extra action must be different from your two regular actions.
- Rain: You may place one bamboo section on any plot of your choice, up to a maximum of four sections per plot.
- Wind: You may (but are not required to) take two identical actions this round, instead of two different ones.
- Storm: The panda gets scared! You can immediately move the panda to any plot of your choice. To recover from its fright, the panda eats one bamboo section from that plot.
- Clouds: You may take one improvement token from the reserve and place it on any plot of your choice. If no improvements are available, you may move an already placed improvement token.
- Question Mark (Choose Your Weather): You get to choose which of the five weather effects (Sun, Rain, Wind, Storm, or Clouds) you want to apply this turn!
2. Perform Actions and Meet Objectives
After applying the weather effect, you get to take two actions from the five available options. Remember, these two actions must typically be different from one another (unless the Wind weather effect allows otherwise). Place your two action tokens on the chosen spaces of your individual board to mark your choices. You can resolve your chosen actions in any order you prefer.
Here are your action choices:
- Plots: Draw 3 plot tiles, choose 1 to keep and place into the game, and return the other two to the bottom of the draw pile.
- When placing a plot, it must be adjacent to the pond OR adjacent to two other plots already in play.
- Plots adjacent to the pond or with a watershed improvement are automatically irrigated. When a plot is irrigated for the first time, immediately add one bamboo section of its color.
- Irrigation: Take one irrigation channel from the reserve and place it on the border between two plots.
- Irrigation channels must form networks starting from the pond and cannot be placed along the pond's border.
- A plot is irrigated if it's next to the pond, has an irrigation channel on one of its borders, or has a watershed improvement.
- When a plot becomes irrigated for the first time, add one bamboo section of its color. If an irrigation channel irrigates two plots, add a section to each.
- Gardener: Move the gardener in a straight line, any number of plots in a chosen direction.
- The gardener can only move over plots, not empty spaces.
- Where the gardener finishes their move, and on all directly adjacent plots of the same color, a bamboo section grows.
- Important: Bamboo only grows on irrigated plots, and a bamboo shoot cannot exceed four sections in height.
- Panda: Move the panda in a straight line, any number of plots in a chosen direction.
- Like the gardener, the panda can only move over plots.
- The panda eats one bamboo section from the plot where it finishes its movement.
- You keep this eaten bamboo section on your individual board to fulfill Panda Objectives.
- Note: If a plot has an enclosure improvement, the panda cannot eat bamboo from it.
- Objective: Draw 1 objective card from the category of your choice (Plot, Gardener, or Panda) and add it to your hand.
- You can only hold a maximum of 5 objective cards. If you have 5, you must complete one before drawing another.
Objective Validation: This doesn't count as an action! At any time during your turn, you can complete any number of objective cards if their conditions are met. Place completed objectives face-up in front of you. Once validated, an objective cannot be lost.
After taking your two actions (and validating any objectives), pass the weather die to the player on your left.
Improvements Explained
Improvements are special abilities for your plots:
- Enclosure: Protects the bamboo on its plot. The panda can move across or stop there, but cannot eat bamboo from it.
- Fertilizer: Boosts bamboo growth. Each time bamboo grows on this plot, two sections are added instead of one (up to the 4-section maximum).
- Watershed: This plot is automatically irrigated and immediately gets its first bamboo section. It does not need irrigation channels. However, a watershed cannot be the starting point for a new irrigation system.
Each plot can only have one improvement (either built-in or added as a token).
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when a player completes a certain number of objectives, depending on the player count:
- 2 players: The game ends when a player completes their 9th objective.
- 3 players: The game ends when a player completes their 8th objective.
- 4 players: The game ends when a player completes their 7th objective.
The player who triggers the end game condition takes the Emperor card. This triggers the last round of play, allowing all other players one final turn to try and complete more objectives. The player who triggered the end game may also complete additional objectives during their final turn.
Once everyone has had their final turn, it's time for scoring!
- Each player totals the victory points indicated on all the objective cards they have completed.
- Any objective cards still in a player's hand are worth no points.
- The player with the highest total score wins the game!
In case of a tie: The tied player with the most points from Panda Objectives wins. If there's still a tie, the tied players share the victory!
Tips for Winning
New to the Imperial gardens? Here are a few pointers to get you started on the path to victory:
- Grab a Plot Early: On your very first turn, make sure to take the "Plots" action. You need land to start growing that precious bamboo! It's the foundation of your garden.
- Irrigation is Key: Remember, bamboo only grows on irrigated plots. Plan your irrigation channels strategically to maximize growth, especially for your Gardener Objectives. Plots adjacent to the pond are automatically irrigated, which is a great starting point.
- Balance Your Objectives: Don't get too focused on just one type of objective. Try to work towards a mix of Plot, Gardener, and Panda Objectives. Sometimes, an action that helps one objective might also set you up for another!
Now you're all set to cultivate your garden and outwit your fellow courtiers. May your bamboo grow tall and your panda be ever so satisfied!
