In Tanuki, players engage in a fun card game where cleverness is as important as luck. Each turn, you need to play card combinations, such as pairs, three-card sequences, or three-of-a-kind, and announce what you're playing. The trick is that only the number on the first card is visible to others, leaving everyone wondering if you're telling the truth or bluffing masterfully. Sequences can be played in either ascending or descending order, giving you more flexibility in your moves. Normally, you need to follow the previous player's combination and try to beat it with higher numbers. But, if you have cards of the same color, you can ignore these rules and play any combination you wish, which is a great trump card for getting out of tight spots or for tricking opponents. If someone suspects your play and still has Dango (a type of betting token), they can challenge you! If the challenge is successful, you must replace the played cards and might lose a Dango. But if the challenger is wrong, they give you a Dango. Players can replenish their hands between turns and gain Onigiri points based on the number of cards remaining. The game has two victory conditions: whoever collects nine Dango wins immediately, or, at the end of the game, the player with the highest Onigiri score wins.
