Game Objective
Teotihuacan: Expansion Period is an expansion for Teotihuacan: City of Gods. Players aim to expand their influence and power within the city and beyond. The goal is to accumulate Victory Points through various means, such as collecting sets of masks, settling new regions on the Empire board, and utilizing the new Mansion (1) Action Board. The game is won by the player with the most Victory Points at the end of the game.
Setup
Follow these steps to integrate the expansion components into the base game:
- General Components: Shuffle the Major Discovery tiles and create a face-down stack separately from the regular Discovery tiles.
- Action Boards: Replace the base game's Forest (2), Stone Quarry (3), and Gold Deposits (4) boards with the new versions. If using the Expanding the Empire (M9) module, replace the Nobles (6) board with the Conquest (6) Action Board.
- Mansion (M7): Place the Mansion (1) Action Board on top of the Palace (1) space. Randomly select one Royal tile from categories A, B, and C, shuffle them, and place one on each of the 3 spaces of the Mansion (1) Action Board. Place a Major Discovery tile on the indicated space.
- Mansion Ownership: Place Mansion Ownership tiles atop the Discovery tiles on the first major step of the specified temples.
- Altars and Shamans (M8): Place one random Altar tile onto each of the 4 large spaces between the Action Boards along the long edges of the Main Board (arrows pointing toward the center). Place a number of face-up Major Discovery tiles on each Altar equal to the number of players.
- Empire Board (M9): Place the Empire board next to the Main Board. Place the two Special Mask tiles next to the Discovery tile piles (do not shuffle them in).
- Player Setup:
- Each player receives 3 additional wooden discs to be used as Claim markers.
- Each player receives one Shaman. In reverse player order, place your Shaman (standing) onto an empty Altar space.
- In player order, each player places a Warrior in the Teotihuacan region on the Empire board.
- Additional Tiles: Add the new Technology tiles, Starting tiles, and the new Priestess tile (11) (if using the Priests and Priestesses (M1) module) to their respective categories.
Game Flow
The game follows the structure of the base game, with the following additions to the turn and phase flow:
- Player Turns: On your turn, you may perform a normal action or use the new Activate Shaman action.
- Shaman Movement: When activating a Shaman, the piece moves counter-clockwise to the next Altar. If a player's Shaman is displaced by another, they must move their Shaman to the next Altar counter-clockwise (without receiving a benefit), which may cause a chain effect.
- Eclipse Scoring: During each Eclipse, before step 6 (cocoa salary), players score Victory Points for every Warrior they have on the Empire map based on the region's distance from Teotihuacan.
Actions and How to Play
Obsidian
Obsidian is a "wild" resource that can be used in place of wood, stone, or gold. However, effects that allow you to take "any" resource do not allow you to take obsidian.
Mansion (1) Action Board
- Worship action: All effects referring to the Palace (1) Action Board apply here. Each of your workers in the general area of the Mansion (1) Action Board contributes +1 to the effect of the Royal tile.
- Claiming the Mansion: The first player to reach the first major step of the specified temples takes the Mansion Ownership tile and places a Claim marker next to the corresponding Royal tile.
- Claimed Royal Tiles: When using a Worship space of a Claimed Royal tile:
- You may pay 1 cocoa to advance once on the associated temple.
- The owner of the Claim marker immediately receives a free power-up (which may trigger an Ascension).
Activate Shaman
Instead of a normal turn, you may move your Shaman to the next Altar counter-clockwise and place it standing up to receive the benefit of that space. Altar benefits include claiming Major Discovery tiles, gaining obsidian, or unlocking locked workers.
Shaman Effect: If your Shaman is standing and you perform the Main action of the Action Board the Shaman points to, treat the action as if you had an additional "virtual" worker (power equal to your lowest value worker on that board). After the action, lay the Shaman down.
Expanding the Empire
- Conquest (6) Action Board: Resolving the Main action here follows the same method as the Forest (2), Stone Quarry (3), or Gold Deposits (4) boards.
- Empire Reward: Add a Warrior to the Teotihuacan region. If the region is occupied, the existing Warrior must move to an adjacent region.
- Build Reward: Pay 2 wood to take the first available Building from the Buildings row. Place it in an unsettled region where you have a Warrior. The Warrior is removed from the game, the region becomes "settled," you gain the region benefit (including Victory Points), and you advance one step on the Avenue of the Dead track.

Tips for Winning
- Utilize the Shaman's Virtual Worker: Use the Shaman to boost the power of your Main actions on adjacent Action Boards, effectively increasing your output without needing to move more workers.
- Strategic Settlement: Prioritize building in regions that provide high Victory Points or powerful benefits, such as the Special Mask tiles found in regions 5 and 9, to maximize your Eclipse scoring.
- Claim Royal Tiles: Aim to be the first to reach the first major step of temples to place Claim markers on Royal tiles, allowing you to receive free power-ups whenever other players use those Worship spaces.
