If you thought the challenge of terraforming Mars was just about oxygen and temperature, get ready for some political chaos! Turmoil is the fifth expansion for Terraforming Mars, and it introduces something the base game lacks: the human factor (and all its drama). Now, besides building cities and forests, you'll have to navigate the Terraforming Committee, a political arena where controlling different parties can completely shift your economic trajectory.
The standout feature is the Global Events cards. Forget the usual predictability; now, dust storms, social riots, or sudden spikes in alloy demand can pop up and disrupt your plans for generations to come. To navigate this uncertainty, you'll need delegates. You can invest to gain influence within parties to ensure the dominant policy favors you, or you can use your political influence to mitigate the negative effects of global events.
The expansion introduces an 'area majority' mechanic applied to politics: whoever controls the most dominant party dictates the rules for the next generation, setting bonuses and policies that affect everyone. It's a much more aggressive and reactive layer of strategy. You can play a moderate, economy-focused game, or you can be the agitator using global events to topple the leader. With new corporations and projects, Turmoil turns the game into a true simulator of human society on a hostile planet. It's perfect for players who have mastered the base game and want to feel the weight of social and political decisions in their hands!

Do I need the base game to play Turmoil?
Absolutely! This is an expansion and only works if you already own Terraforming Mars.
Does the game get much longer with this expansion?
It might slightly increase playtime due to the political layer, but the focus is on depth rather than just duration.
Is this expansion very difficult?
It increases complexity. If you are already an expert in the base game, you'll feel at home, but it requires more forward planning.
How many players can play?
It works perfectly for 1 to 5 players, just like the base game.
Can global events ruin my strategy?
They can, but the whole idea is to force you to be flexible and plan for different scenarios!
Do I need to know English to play?
Yes, most components (cards and events) are in English, so a good grasp of the language is essential.
