About the game

What you do in a play session

Hey there, Castles of Burgundy fans! We've got a little something to spice up your games: the first expansion, which actually consists of new player boards straight from Spielbox magazine. These are four double-sided boards, numbered 10a through 10h, ready to refresh your experience.

The main twist here is a subtle but strategically impactful change to the tile placement rule. Previously, you just needed to place a new tile adjacent to something already in your domain. Now, in addition to that, the new tile must be connected, directly or indirectly, to a castle. Think of it as if everything in your principality needs a royal connection, either by proximity or by belonging to the same 'family' (color) of tiles. This rule doesn't apply to new castles, which can still be placed as usual. Oh, and if you miss out on a castle you wanted, there's a way to get it back! By spending 5 victory points and using both dice actions, you can retrieve a castle that was previously set aside. It's an expansion that adds an extra layer of challenge without overcomplicating things, perfect for those who have already mastered the base game and want to test new tactics. Get your dice and your plans ready, because Burgundy just got more interesting!

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

6 questions
Do I need the base game The Castles of Burgundy to use this expansion?
Absolutely! This is an expansion, so it adds new components and rules to the original game. It won't work without the base game.
How many players does this expansion support?
It's designed for the base game, which supports 2 to 4 players. The new boards are for these same player counts.
Does it significantly increase the game's complexity?
It adds an extra layer of strategy with the castle connection rule, but it's not overwhelmingly complex. If you're already playing the base game, you'll get the hang of it quickly.
What exactly comes in this expansion?
It includes 4 double-sided player boards, which replace the original boards. They introduce a new tile placement rule.
Does this expansion change the game's duration?
The game might take a little longer, as you'll need to think more carefully about tile placement, but it's not a drastic change. The estimated playtime remains around 90 minutes.
Is the new rule difficult to learn?
The concept is simple: everything you place must have some connection to a castle. It might take a few rounds to get used to, but soon you'll be doing it without even thinking.
