About the game

What you do in a play session

The eighth deluxe expansion of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, A Shadow in the East, brings a dark scenario where Mordor’s cult spreads across the realm of Rhûn. Instead of following the familiar path, heroes now tackle three new quests: crossing the River Running, reaching the capital Dorwinion, and scaling the hills of Rhûn, all within a cooperative adventure that demands strategy and coordination. The expansion introduces double‑faced hero cards, letting a single character play two distinct roles, plus a new version of The One Ring that adds unpredictable effects. It also adds a new card type called “contract,” offering gains or risks depending on how the player chooses to bind the agreement. For fans of the hand‑management system, the new contract mechanic and variable player powers add layers of decision‑making and customization. The game remains cooperative, but now includes solo rules that keep tension even with a single hero on the field. If you love Tolkien’s epic atmosphere and want to deepen your gameplay with new cards and challenges, A Shadow in the East promises hours of adventure and unexpected twists.

With 1 to 2 players, a session lasts between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on player experience and card choices. The complexity level is medium, as it requires attention to card details and hero interaction. Components include a 100‑card deck, condition tokens, a six‑sided die, and a progress marker. If you already own the base game, this expansion lets you expand your collection and explore new stories within the LCG universe.
