About the game

What you do in a play session

If you’ve already tackled The Lord of the Rings adventures in the regular mode, the Nightmare Deck ‘The Hills of Emyn Muil’ will bring you back — but with a darker edge. This expansion offers a grimmer take on the classic scenario, where heroes face deadlier enemies, gloomier locations, and surprises that will keep your heart racing. Rather than simply replay the same sequence of encounters, each Nightmare Deck introduces 20 alternate encounter cards, along with clear instructions for swapping out the originals. On top of that, a Nightmare Mode card tells you which cards from the original deck are removed, while another card adds extra rules that crank up the tension and unpredictability.

The complete set includes 20 brand‑new encounter cards, a Nightmare Mode card, and an additional rules card, all ready to be mixed into the mission’s original deck. The goal stays the same: defeat the threat looming over the Hills of Emyn Muil, but now with more challenges and strategic depth. Like the base game, it’s cooperative and demands players coordinate their actions, but hand management makes every choice more critical, as the cards you hold can be the difference between victory and defeat. Variable player powers also come into play, letting each hero use their unique ability to turn the tide in their favor.

To play, simply have the base game, pick the “The Hills of Emyn Muil” mission, and replace the indicated cards. The playtime stays around 60 minutes, perfect for short but intense sessions. If you love revisiting familiar settings with a touch of terror and want to test your group’s mettle against even deadlier foes, this deck is the right pick. The expansion is ideal for those who already know the LCG and want to step up the stakes while preserving Tolkien’s epic atmosphere with a dash of suspense and surprise.
