About the game

What you do in a play session

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game – The Steward's Fear is the first adventure in the "Against the Shadow" cycle, bringing 60 cards that plunge players into a corruption plot that besieges the heart of Gondor. The expansion follows immediately after the events of Heirs of Númenor and requires players to already own the Core Set and the Heirs of Númenor expansion to begin. Among the new content, there is a new hero, three copies of each additional player card, and an intelligent scenario that takes the team through the main streets and alleys of Minas Tirith, reaching a dark underworld filled with villains and intrigue. The game retains the classic cooperative mechanics of the LCG, where everyone works together against scenario challenges, while hand management demands tactical decisions about which cards to play, hold, or discard. Variable player powers ensure each game is unique, as heroes possess different abilities that influence overall strategy. Playtime ranges from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on experience and number of players, which can be 1 or 2. The expansion not only expands Tolkien’s universe with new characters and scenarios but also offers a deeper, more engaging gameplay experience, perfect for fans who want to delve further into Gondor’s intrigues. Components include 60 new cards, 3 copies of each player card, a Minas Tirith map scenario, and a hero deck, along with damage, resource, and event tokens. Deck building requires players to choose 5 hero cards, 20 player cards, and 15 event cards, balancing attack, defense, and support. The game also features damage tokens that mark hero losses, creating tension and urgency. In short, The Steward's Fear delivers a rich cooperative experience with engaging narrative and mechanics that challenge both strategy and luck, ideal for groups who enjoy narrative challenges and Tolkien’s atmosphere.
