About the game

What you do in a play session

You know those games that seem ridiculously simple but leave everyone's brain frying while trying to predict the next move? That's The Number. Hailing from Japan, it's one of those compact titles that defy a single category, blending bluffing, risk management, and a healthy dose of guessing. The premise is straightforward: you need to choose numbers, but the real strategy lies in knowing which digits to use and when to take a risk to avoid elimination.

The game takes place over two rounds, each consisting of five turns where everyone plays simultaneously. The flow is basically: Choose, Check, and Resolve. First, each player secretly writes a number from 000 to 999 on their board. Once everyone reveals, the numbers are lined up from highest to lowest. This is where the tension kicks in: if your number shares any digit with any number listed below it, you're eliminated and score nothing. If you survived, congratulations! You earn points equal to the first digit of your number.

But here's the catch: after scoring, you must cross off the digits you used on your board. This means those digits are unavailable for the rest of the round. If you used a '9' to score big now, you won't have that digit to build high numbers later. It's a constant mental tug-of-war: you try to boost your score, but if you're too ambitious, you'll clash with someone else's number and leave the round empty-handed. It's fast to learn—five minutes and you're in—but mastering the psychology of your opponents and managing your available digits is the real challenge. It's the perfect game for those who want something dynamic, tense, and portable, ideal for filling the gap between larger games or for anyone who loves a quick logic puzzle.
