Game Objective

In The Witcher: Old World – Legendary Hunt, players take on the role of witchers on a high-stakes mission. The main objective is to hunt and defeat a Legendary Monster before it causes excessive destruction to the Continent. The first player to successfully kill the Legendary Monster immediately wins the game.

Setup

Setup should follow the rules of the base game and then proceed with the steps for the Legendary Hunt:

  1. Place a Large Help Card next to the Trophy Track. For the first game, use Side A (basic version); for longer games, use Side B.
  2. Choose a Legendary Monster (or determine randomly). Place the Large Monster Card next to the Game Board and position its Miniature on the Location indicated on the card. The remaining monster cards and miniatures return to the box.
  3. Shuffle the Special Fight Cards and place them next to the Large Monster Card.
  4. The Last Player (who is to the right of the Starting Player) shuffles the 12 Legendary Monster Movement Cards and places them face down in the Movement Deck.
  5. Shuffle all Destruction Tokens and place them face down next to the Game Board.

Note for Solo Mode: Follow the basic setup, but draw 3 Monster Tokens (one of each level: I, II, and III) and use the Solo Help Card. The Movement Deck should contain 9 cards for Easy difficulty, 8 for Normal, or 7 for Hard.

Game Flow

The game proceeds according to the standard game flow, with the following modifications for the expansion:

Legendary Monster Movement

After the Last Player finishes their turn, they reveal the top card of the Movement Deck to determine the monster's movement. The monster performs all movements indicated on the card, one by one, following these rules:

  • The monster moves to the closest Connected Location to the indicated Primary Location.
  • The monster cannot move to Locations that have a Destruction Token.
  • If there is a tie in distance to a location without destruction, the Last Player decides the destination.
  • If the monster is at the Primary Location, it moves towards the Secondary Location.
  • If all nearby locations have Destruction Tokens, the Last Player chooses any Connected Location without destruction for the monster to move to. If all connected locations are destroyed, the movement is ignored.
  • Whenever the monster leaves a Location, place a Destruction Token face down on that location.

Expelling the Legendary Monster

If you are in the same Location as the monster, you can try to expel it during your turn by following this order:

  1. Discard 1 card from your hand.
  2. Draw a card from the Movement Deck. The monster performs only 1 movement towards the Primary Location (or Secondary, if already at the primary).
  3. (Optional) Perform the current Location Action.

Fighting the Legendary Monster

Players can attack the monster like a common monster. If any player has face-down Destruction Tokens, they start the first Fight Turn. Otherwise, the monster starts. The Legendary Monster's Health Point Deck is formed by the Special Fight Cards minus the number of cards equivalent to the number of Destruction Tokens the Active Player has.

Actions and How to Play

In addition to the standard base game actions, Legendary Hunt introduces specific mechanics:

Gaining Destruction Tokens

If a player ends Phase I of their turn in a Location with a Destruction Token, they reveal it and gain a reward before proceeding to Phase II. Rewards include: drawing Potions, gaining Gold, drawing additional cards, or increasing Attributes.

Monster Abilities and Attacks

The monster has a Special Ability and can perform Special Attacks (such as Charge or Bite). Some examples of card effects include:

  • Knockout: The player takes damage equal to double their Potions and Bombs.
  • Keep Your Distance: The player takes 3 Damage and their next Combo deals 2 less Damage.
  • Sharp Chelicerae: The player must discard all Dodge (green) cards from their hand or take 2 Damage.
  • Crushing Force: The player takes 3 Damage and discards 1 Dodge (green) card (or takes 7 Damage if unable).

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends in two ways:

  1. Victory: The first player to kill the Legendary Monster immediately wins the game.
  2. Defeat: If the Legendary Monster is not killed, the players are defeated. In solo mode, you lose if the Movement Deck runs out and you need to draw a card.

Monster Protection: Monster Protection reduces Damage dealt by any effect (Special Abilities, Potions, Combo, etc.). The protection value depends on the player's position on the Trophy Track, as indicated on the Large Help Card.
