Step by step
Game Objective
In Tribute to Mondrian, players take on the role of artists creating compositions in the style of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. The goal is to draw lines and color white areas on the Easel to create the most valuable artwork, following the criteria of the Evaluation cards and strategically using the Favorite Color. The player with the most points at the end of 10 rounds wins.
Setup
- Easel: Each player receives a sheet with a 7x7 grid (rows 1-7 and columns A-F).
- Favorite Color: Choose a color and color the Brush on the Easel with the corresponding chalk.
- Evaluation Cards: Separate them by border groups (A-gray, B-beige, C-colored). For the first game, use 1 card from A and 1 from B, placing them face-up on the table.
- Initial Lines: Shuffle the 13 Lines cards, draw 3, and place them on the table. Each player draws 3 black lines on their Easel, choosing one option from each card, without crossing existing lines.
- Game Piles: Shuffle the remaining 10 Lines cards and the 10 Colors cards into separate piles.
Game Flow
The game consists of 10 rounds. In each round:
- Reveal 1 Lines card and 1 Colors card from the piles.
- All players act simultaneously, choosing one action:
- Draw a line (with black chalk)
- Color a white area
- Use a wildcard (up to 2 times per game)
- Pass (if unable to act)
Actions and How to Play
A) Draw a Line
Use black chalk to draw a line indicated on the current Lines card. Rules:
- Do not cross existing lines—stop when encountering another line or the edge.
- Do not draw in already colored areas.
B) Color a White Area
Follow the color on the Colors card and the influence zone on the Lines card:
- You can only color areas with at least 1 square in the gray zone of the Lines card.
- Fill all squares in the area with the chosen color.
- If the Colors card has two colors, choose one.
C) Use a Wildcard
Cross out one of the 4 numbers on the Easel to:
- Draw a line not listed on the card.
- Color with a different color than the card.
- Color outside the influence zone (uses 2 wildcards if changing both color and zone).
Each unused wildcard is worth +4 points at the end.
End of Game and Scoring
At the end of the 10th round, calculate:
- Paint Palette: If any color or white areas are missing, note -7 points. Cancel the penalty if you have all 4 colors and at least 1 white area.
- Evaluation Cards: Add points from each card based on their criteria (e.g., white areas, square shapes, adjacent colors).
- Favorite Color: 1 point for every 2 squares in areas of the chosen color (discarding odd numbers).
- Wildcards: +4 points per unused wildcard (maximum 8).
The player with the highest total score wins. In case of a tie, the tiebreaker is: 1) Favorite Color points, 2) wildcards used.
Tips to Win
- Prioritize large areas to color with your Favorite Color—every 2 squares are worth 1 point.
- Use wildcards sparingly: each unused one is worth 4 extra points.
- Pay attention to Evaluation cards from the start—they determine how your areas will be scored.
