Objective of the Game
The Wool Street game is all about trendiness in the New York market. Each player starts with a wardrobe of wool cards and, by the end of the game, the player who has the trendiest wool products in their wardrobe wins.
Setup
- Give each player 10 wool cards (two of each of the five colours). Players place these cards in front of them, stacked by colour – this is their wardrobe. Any remaining wool cards are returned to the box.
- Shuffle all New York cards. Place 5 New York cards face down in the centre of the table. These form the initial drawing deck.
- From the remaining 30 New York cards, deal 6 face‑down cards to each player. Each player looks at these cards secretly, memorises them, and then returns them to the pile.
- Shuffle the remaining 30 New York cards (excluding the 5 that are already in the centre) and place them face down on top of the initial 5 cards, completing the drawing deck. This pile is the players’ market survey.
- Randomly choose the player who will take the first turn.
Game Flow
Play proceeds clockwise. On a player’s turn, they must perform two mandatory actions in the following order:
- Draw: Take the top New York card from the drawing deck and place it in the centre of the table next to another New York card of the same colour. If no other card of that colour is present, a new row is created.
- Sell or Buy a wool card:
- Sell: Take one wool card from your wardrobe and place it in the centre next to the row of New York cards of the same colour. If no such row exists, a new row is formed.
- Buy: Take one wool card from the centre of the table and add it to your wardrobe. If there are no wool cards in the centre, you may not perform the Buy action and must Sell instead.
All wool cards in a player’s wardrobe must remain visible to other players and are stacked by colour.
When a New York card is placed and it becomes the seventh card of its colour in the centre, the highest remaining value card is assigned to that colour. The assignment order is:
- First colour to reach 7 cards receives the value 2 card.
- Second and third colours receive the value 1 cards.
- Fourth colour receives the value -1 card.
- Fifth colour receives the value -2 card.
Assigning a value card is not an action; play continues normally after the assignment.
The game ends when the drawing deck is exhausted. The active player performs one final Sell or Buy action, then the game ends.
