About the game

What you do in a play session

Imagine a room where rival beetle colonies, red and green, are locked in a fierce territorial dispute. In Bugs Under Rugs, you aren't just moving pieces; you are managing a colony that expands and contracts. The board is a hexagonal grid with seven black rugs scattered about, and your goal is to hide as many of your beetles as possible under them before the game ends. The clever twist here is that your movement distance depends entirely on how many groups (swarms) you have on the board. If you spread your pieces out, your beetles race across the floor; if you bunch them up, they creep slowly, one cell at a time. Every turn is a tactical puzzle: by hiding a beetle or moving a stack, you alter your swarm configuration, which drastically changes the reach of your next move. It’s a game of pure strategy where you must think carefully before acting, as you can never move back toward the walls. Combat is direct and ruthless: if you land on an enemy stack, you climb to the top and take control of the entire pile. This applies even to beetles already hidden under the rugs! Whoever is on top of a mixed stack at the end of the game scores points for every beetle in that stack. If you hide all your exposed beetles, you have no moves left and must hope your opponent gets stuck too. When neither player can move, the rugs are lifted, and the score is tallied. It’s a tense, fast-paced, and highly cerebral experience, perfect for those who enjoy two-player games that demand constant planning and a dash of malice.
