Carcassonne: Hills & Sheep is the ninth official expansion of the classic Carcassonne, adding a fresh set of pieces, rules, and of course the charm of shepherds and wolves that makes the game even more fun. If you're already familiar with the tile‑placing mechanic that builds cities, roads, monasteries, and fields, get ready to take a walk on the hills: each tile with a hill icon is stacked on top of another, creating an elevation that can decide who wins a feature in case of a tie. This detail gives a “everything can change” vibe that pairs nicely with the added sheep.

Sheep are tokens that can only be placed on fields. When you expand your shepherd’s territory, you have two choices: draw a sheep from the bag or trade all accumulated sheep for points. Each sheep is worth 1 to 4 points, but there are two wolves hidden in the bag; if you draw a wolf, all your sheep are lost. This “push‑your‑luck” element makes the decision to “cash in” or “keep going” more tense and strategic. Moreover, vineyards, already present in the base game, now grant 3 bonus points to each completed monastery, encouraging players to protect and finish these bonus spots.

The expansion does not change Carcassonne’s standard scoring rules, but it adds new scoring opportunities and, at the same time, increases board complexity with more tiles and pieces in play. Components include 26 hill tiles, 18 vineyard tiles, 6 shepherds, 48 sheep tokens (including 2 wolves), and a sheep bag. It is compatible only with the base game, so you need the original Carcassonne to play. If you enjoy territorial strategy, like a bit of risk, and want something that fits into 40‑minute sessions with 2 to 6 players, Hills & Sheep is a fantastic choice. If you prefer shorter or less variable games, it may be a bit more complex, but it still keeps the fun essence of Carcassonne.
